Chapter 15 - The Second Voice

Sofia kept the phone pressed to her ear.
The melody continued for twelve seconds.
Then the line went silent.
“Mother?” Sofia whispered.
A woman inhaled softly.
“Sofia.”
The voice was older than Sofia remembered, but memory recognized what logic could not.
Her knees weakened.
Elena reached for the phone.
Sofia stepped away.
“Where are you?”
“I cannot tell you.”
“You have been alive all this time.”
Another pause.
“I have been trying to stay alive.”
“You let me bury you.”
“I know.”
“You let me grow up believing you were gone.”
“I know.”
“You knew about the wedding.”
The woman’s breathing changed.
“I tried to stop it.”
“Javier heard your voice giving orders.”
“My voice has been used for many things.”
“Did you send Carmen the photograph?”
“No.”
“Did you send the message telling her to deliver me to the hotel?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
“That is why you must listen carefully.”
Sofia turned on the speaker.
Elena, Alexander, Adriana and Mercer gathered around the phone.
Luciana spoke again.
“Rafael and Vale were never the heads of Meridian Seven. They managed accounts, moved people and controlled the evidence. But the original network began before any of us were born.”
“Who controls it?” Alexander asked.
Luciana went silent when she heard him.
“Alexander?”
“Yes.”
“You opened the room.”
“Sofia did.”
A faint sound that might have been relief passed through the line.
“Then she found the notebook.”
“We stopped its destruction sequence,” Sofia said.
“No, you stopped the visible sequence.”
Mercer looked toward the tablet.
“What does that mean?”
“The notebook copied itself when Sofia completed the promise. One copy went to federal servers. Another went to Meridian Seven.”
“Why would you design that?” Adriana demanded.
“I did not.”
The line crackled.
Luciana’s voice became urgent.
“Someone altered the system after I disappeared. Someone inside our family.”
Elena stared at Adriana.
Adriana stared at Alexander.
Sofia felt the old pattern returning.
Suspicion.
Silence.
Family members turning against one another while the true enemy watched.
“No,” Sofia said firmly. “We are not doing this again. Tell us exactly what you know.”
Luciana did not answer immediately.
When she did, fear had entered her voice.
“The woman who called Carmen used my handwriting. The person who spoke to Javier used my voice. The system inside the condo recognized Adriana. Every piece was designed to make you search for a missing Serrano woman.”
“You,” Sofia said.
“No.”
A soft chime sounded through the call.
Luciana appeared to move away from the phone.
“What was that?” Mercer asked.
“They found this line.”
“Who?”
Luciana returned.
“Go to the mirror in the hidden room.”
Sofia and the others entered the narrow chamber.
A tall antique mirror hung at the rear wall. It had been there since they first opened the room, but no one had examined it closely.
“Now what?” Sofia asked.
“Remove the silver pin from the lower frame.”
Alexander found the pin and pulled it free.
The mirror shifted outward.
Behind it was a shallow compartment.
Inside lay a sealed birth certificate and a photograph.
Sofia took them.
The photograph showed Luciana, Elena and Adriana as young women standing outside the Serrano condo.
A fourth woman stood between them.
She had Sofia’s eyes.
Her face had been scratched out with black ink.
Sofia opened the birth certificate.
It recorded the birth of a female child two years after Adriana.
The child’s name had been removed.
The parents were Mateo and Isabel Serrano.
“There was another sister,” Sofia whispered.
“No,” Luciana said through the phone. “There was another daughter.”
Elena’s face lost its color.
“What is the difference?”
The connection began to break.
Luciana spoke rapidly.
“Our father did not sign that certificate. Look at the witness signature.”
Sofia examined the bottom of the document.
One name appeared beneath the faded seal.
Carmen Robles.
The call filled with static.
“Mother, wait.”
“Do not trust Carmen’s surrender,” Luciana said. “She was not escaping Rafael. She was protecting someone else.”
“Who is the fourth woman?”
The line continued breaking.
Luciana tried to answer.
Only fragments came through.
“She was raised inside the hotel…”
Static swallowed several words.
“…she gave the first wedding-night order…”
The lights inside the hidden room went out.
Mercer’s tablet displayed a security warning.
Someone had accessed the penthouse elevator using Sofia’s personal code.
The screen changed to a live lobby camera.
Carmen Robles stood inside the elevator.
She was supposed to be in federal protective custody.
Beside her was Javier.
He appeared exhausted, his jacket stained with river water, but he was alive.
Between them stood a woman in a white coat.
Her face remained hidden beneath a veil.
The elevator began rising toward the penthouse.
Sofia returned to the phone.
“Mother, who is she?”
Luciana’s voice came through one final time.
“She is the woman Elena has been protecting since the night I disappeared.”
Everyone turned toward Elena.
Elena stared at the approaching elevator on the monitor.
Her expression was not confusion.
It was recognition.
The elevator reached the penthouse.
The doors began to open.
Elena stepped in front of Sofia and whispered, “Whatever she says, do not tell her where your mother is.”
Sofia’s phone went silent.
A woman’s white-gloved hand appeared between the elevator doors.
In that hand was Sofia’s missing wedding pendant.
Then the veiled woman spoke in the same voice that had ordered Carmen to obtain the signature.
“Elena,” she said. “You promised me the girl would never learn my name.”
Elena slowly closed the hidden-room door.
May you like
Before the steel sealed them inside, Sofia saw the veiled woman lift her face toward the security camera.
And beneath the lace, she was smiling.
