Chapter 3 - A Bride Without a Witness

Inside the wedding suite, Carmen placed the leather folder on the table.

“You will sign,” she said.

Sofia stood beside the bed, still wearing her veil.

“No.”

The two women in hotel uniforms moved to either side of the door.

They were not hotel employees.

One carried a small camera. The other wore thin black gloves.

Carmen opened the document.

“Your signature adds Javier to the deed. Once the marriage is registered, the transfer becomes effective.”

“You planned this.”

“I prepared for your stubbornness.”

Sofia reached for her phone.

The woman with the gloves took it first.

“Give it back.”

Carmen poured champagne into a glass.

“Sit down, Sofia.”

“I am leaving.”

She moved toward the door.

The women blocked her.

Sofia called Javier’s name.

He answered from the hallway.

“Sign it.”

The sound of his voice caused more pain than Carmen’s threat.

“Javier, open the door.”

“You are emotional. My mother is helping you make the right decision.”

“You knew this would happen.”

Silence.

Then Sofia heard him speak softly to someone else in the hallway.

“Do not let her scream loud enough for the guests downstairs to hear.”

Carmen held out a pen.

Sofia looked at the document.

Her mother’s condo.

The hidden room.

The brass key.

Javier’s questions.

Suddenly, the marriage made sense.

It had never been about love.

“You need the condo for something inside it,” Sofia said.

Carmen’s hand stopped.

That single reaction gave Sofia the answer.

“What did my mother hide?”

Carmen placed the pen on the document.

“Your mother stole something that belonged to us.”

“My mother never knew your family.”

Carmen’s mouth curved into a small smile.

“Luciana knew everyone who mattered.”

Sofia stepped backward.

“What are you talking about?”

“Sign, and you may never need to know.”

The woman with the camera switched it on.

Carmen spoke toward the lens.

“Sofia is signing voluntarily. She is transferring partial ownership to her husband as a wedding gift.”

Sofia stared into the camera.

“My name is Sofia Serrano. I am being held in this room against my will.”

The gloved woman seized the camera and ended the recording.

Carmen’s expression hardened.

“You always were your mother’s daughter.”

Sofia grabbed the champagne glass and threw it toward the fireplace.

It shattered against the stone.

She ran for the adjoining balcony door.

One woman caught the fabric of her gown.

The stitching tore, but Sofia reached the balcony.

Rain swept across the terrace. Far below, traffic moved through the city.

She screamed Elena’s name.

A hand covered her mouth and pulled her back inside.

The attack lasted less than two minutes.

There were no weapons.

No visible injuries that could not be hidden by makeup and fabric.

Only pressure, threats and the cold realization that Javier remained outside the door listening to everything.

When Sofia stopped resisting, Carmen knelt beside her.

“You will sign now.”

Sofia’s hand trembled as she took the pen.

Carmen smiled.

Then Sofia wrote the name Luciana Serrano across the signature line.

Carmen stared at it.

“That is not your legal signature.”

“It is the only name you will get from me.”

Fury transformed Carmen’s face.

A knock interrupted her.

Three slow taps.

The women froze.

Carmen moved to the door but did not open it.

A voice came through the wood.

A woman’s voice.

Calm. Controlled. Familiar.

“Enough delay. Obtain the correct signature before midnight.”

Sofia lifted her head.

She knew that voice.

It belonged to Elena.

Carmen looked toward the ceiling camera.

“The bride is refusing.”

“Then remind her what happened to her mother.”

Sofia’s breath stopped.

Carmen turned back to her.

“Your mother did not die because her car failed.”

Before Sofia could respond, the fire alarm sounded throughout the hotel.

Red lights flashed.

The suite door unlocked automatically.

The women moved at once.

Carmen gathered the documents. One woman took the camera. The other pulled Sofia away from the exit.

But smoke began entering through the ventilation system.

Guests shouted in the corridor.

Javier opened the door and stared at Sofia’s damaged gown.

For a second, husband and wife faced each other.

Sofia saw no guilt in his eyes.

Only calculation.

“Where is the signed deed?” he asked.

Sofia pushed past him.

He caught her wrist.

Then Elena appeared at the end of the corridor.

She was running toward them with two hotel security officers behind her.

Javier released Sofia immediately.

Carmen disappeared into the service stairwell.

Sofia reached Elena and collapsed against her.

As Elena held her, Sofia heard the announcement that the fire alarm had been triggered manually from the hotel kitchen.

Someone had created an escape route.

Someone who knew exactly when Sofia would need it.
