Chapter 13 - The Wedding-Night Order

Emergency lights activated along the floor.
Mercer’s agents moved immediately.
Rafael attempted to enter a side passage, but Javier stepped in front of him.
For the first time that night, Javier chose against the man who raised him.
Rafael struck him aside and ran.
Adriana followed.
Alexander seized Vale before he could reach the black notebook.
Vale did not resist.
“You have no idea what you are protecting,” he said.
Alexander secured his wrists.
“I know exactly who I am protecting.”
Sofia moved toward the notebook.
A red indicator flashed on its cover.
Mercer saw it.
“Do not touch it.”
A timer appeared.
Four minutes.
The notebook contained an internal destruction device designed to erase its digital pages and burn the paper records with a chemical reaction.
Vale smiled.
“Luciana designed it.”
“Can it be stopped?” Sofia asked.
“Only by the person who activated it.”
“Who activated it?”
Vale looked toward the darkness where Rafael had escaped.
“Ask your mother.”
Sofia ignored him and examined the table.
Her mother had always created puzzles for her when she was a child.
Not complicated puzzles.
Patterns.
Songs.
Repeated phrases.
Sofia remembered the video hidden in her gown.
Do not trust the first voice you recognize.
The timer was waiting for vocal authorization.
Not the first voice.
A second one.
“Adriana,” Sofia called.
No answer.
She had disappeared into the tunnel after Rafael.
“Elena’s voice will not work,” Alexander said.
“It is not supposed to.”
Sofia looked at Javier.
“You have Serrano blood.”
“So?”
“The room accepted your hand. Try the phrase.”
Javier approached the notebook.
“The house remembers the third daughter.”
Rejected.
The timer reached three minutes.
Sofia thought of Luciana’s wedding melody.
She hummed the first line.
The notebook screen changed.
A new prompt appeared.
Complete the promise.
Sofia remembered sitting beneath the piano after the funeral. Elena had taught her words to the melody, saying Luciana invented them.
No river can erase a name.
Sofia spoke the line.
The timer stopped.
The notebook opened.
Vale’s confidence vanished.
Mercer began photographing the pages.
Each contained a confession recorded in Luciana’s handwriting.
Payments authorized by Rafael.
Witness locations sold by Vale.
Judicial orders signed by Emilio Robles.
The final section documented the plan to place Alexander inside the military procurement system.
It proved he had been targeted, not recruited.
Javier looked over Sofia’s shoulder.
A page bearing his birth name described the plan to use him as a bloodline key.
His entire life had been engineered.
He sat down against the vault wall.
Rafael’s voice suddenly echoed from the tunnel.
“You were never supposed to read that, Gabriel.”
He held Adriana in front of him, one arm locked around her shoulders.
A small pistol rested near her side.
The agents froze.
Rafael looked toward Sofia.
“Bring me the notebook.”
Javier stood.
“Let her go.”
Rafael laughed.
“You still believe you are my son?”
“You made me believe it.”
“I made you useful.”
Javier moved slowly between Rafael and Sofia.
“Take me instead.”
“No.”
“You need Serrano blood to reopen the condo after the federal seizure.”
Rafael’s eyes narrowed.
Javier continued.
“Without me, you lose everything.”
Sofia understood what he was doing.
He was repeating the manipulation Rafael had taught him, but this time he was using it to protect someone else.
Rafael shifted the weapon away from Adriana.
It was the opening she needed.
Adriana twisted free.
Mercer’s agents rushed forward.
Rafael fired into the ceiling and ran through the side passage.
Javier followed.
Sofia called his name, but he did not stop.
Seconds later, the tunnel shook.
A heavy steel gate dropped between them.
Sofia reached it as Javier appeared on the other side.
Rafael had disappeared into the darkness beyond him.
“Open it,” Sofia demanded.
Javier examined the controls.
“It is locked from my side.”
“Then come back.”
He looked toward the tunnel.
“If Rafael reaches the river exit, he disappears again.”
“You are not an agent.”
“No. I am the reason he got this far.”
“That does not mean you have to die proving you regret it.”
Javier’s expression softened.
“For once, I am not asking you to forgive me.”
He stepped away from the gate.
“Sofia, the voice on my earpiece during the wedding was not Rafael. It was not Vale, either.”
She gripped the steel bars.
“Whose was it?”
Javier looked into the tunnel.
May you like
“Your mother’s.”
Then he ran after Rafael.
