Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN CALLED ANNA
Daniel said Anna Vale had lived for six years under federal protection as Dr. Naomi Keller, a pediatric surgeon at Saint Gabriel's Hospital.
Emily remembered a doctor who had visited Lily after a severe fever when she was three. The woman had stood beside the bed long after the examination, watching Lily sleep with tears in her eyes.
“You let her see Lily,” Emily said.
“Once a year,” Daniel admitted. “From a distance.”
Lily absorbed this with the solemn concentration of a child forced into an adult world. “Does she love me?”
Daniel knelt. “Very much.”
“Then why didn't she come get me?”
“Because Victor would have followed her.”
Sarah interrupted. Federal teams were approaching the school. Daniel showed them a route through the gymnasium tunnels. Before leaving, Emily demanded the truth about his apparent public betrayal.
He had recorded the kidnapping statement under threat, using their ring signal to warn her. Victor wanted Emily isolated and discredited. Daniel had cooperated long enough to place the architect token with Lily and reveal the courthouse.
“What happens after the courthouse?” Emily asked.
“If we activate the failsafe, Meridian loses the identity archive and its money.”
“And Victor?”
“He loses the only thing he has ever loved: control.”
Daniel led them through the tunnels but stopped at the final exit. The tracker in his shoulder would expose them. Sarah offered to remove it with a knife. Daniel refused, saying it was wired to a pulse sensor.
Emily realized he intended to separate again.
“You don't get to disappear and call it protection,” she said.
For the first time, Daniel's careful mask broke. “I don't know how to keep you safe without leaving.”
“Then learn.”
They staged his death using a medical monitor from the school nurse's office and a signal loop Priya created. For ninety seconds, Victor's system believed Daniel's heart had stopped. Sarah cut out the tracker. Daniel nearly bled unconscious, but he survived.
The group split into two teams. Marcus and Priya would infiltrate the courthouse archive. Daniel and Sarah would draw Meridian security toward the river. Emily and Lily would locate Anna, who possessed the last biometric confirmation needed to distinguish Lily from a cloned genetic key.
They returned secretly to Saint Gabriel's during shift change. Dr. Naomi Keller was operating. Emily waited outside the theater while every minute tightened around them.
When Naomi emerged, she saw Lily and stopped breathing.
No dramatic confession followed. She simply knelt and asked, “May I look at you?”
Lily nodded.
Naomi touched the crescent mark near her heel and began to cry.
Emily felt jealousy, compassion, and grief collide. This woman had given Lily life. Emily had given her every day after.
Naomi thanked her.
“Do not thank me yet,” Emily said. “Help me keep her alive.”
Naomi revealed that Victor had anticipated the failsafe. He needed Lily not only to unlock the archive, but to activate a second system called Genesis. It could generate replacement identities for Meridian's leaders after the archive was destroyed.
“Lily is not just the key to ending Nursery,” Naomi said. “She is the key to rebuilding it.”
A nurse entered and handed Naomi a package delivered moments earlier.
Inside was a child's silver ankle tag and a note:
BRING ALL THREE MOTHERS TO THE COURTHOUSE.
Below the message was a photograph of Sarah bound to a chair.
Naomi asked Emily for permission before touching Lily, a courtesy Daniel had denied both women for years. Emily noticed it and allowed the examination.
Lily studied Naomi's face. “Do I look like you?”
“Your eyebrows do when you're angry,” Naomi said.
Lily immediately frowned at a mirror, and all three of them laughed despite the danger. The brief sound felt almost forbidden.
Naomi explained that Anna Vale had not been a helpless victim. She had designed part of Victor's genetic encryption before realizing how he intended to use it. After Lily's birth, Anna planned to expose him. Daniel's raid interrupted her escape, and each believed the other had betrayed her.
“Why become Naomi?” Emily asked.
“Because Anna was a mother Victor could hunt. Naomi was a doctor he could overlook.”
Naomi had chosen a life where she saved other children because she could not openly save her own. She kept a notebook of letters to Lily, one for every birthday, none delivered. Emily promised Lily would read them someday, when the child chose.

The silver ankle tag in Victor's package contained a tracking dust that Priya detected just before they left. They sealed it inside a surgical waste container and sent it toward another facility, buying precious time.
Yet the photograph of Sarah proved Victor had anticipated their caution. In the background, a courtroom clock showed a time twenty minutes ahead. It was not a recording. It was a scheduled threat, telling them exactly how long Sarah had before he began hurting her.
