Chapter 14 - THE GIRL WITH EMILY'S EYES
Emily wanted to run to the girl, but training she barely remembered kept her still.
The teenager was too old to be the baby from Saint Gabriel's. Her face resembled Emily because Meridian had selected and trained look-alikes before. Identity was their favorite weapon.
“Where is Victor?” Sarah asked.
Elena glanced toward the windows. “Watching.”
She said she had been raised in Nursery houses under several names. Victor recently told her that Emily Arden was her biological mother and Daniel Cross her father. He showed her photographs, medical records, and letters supposedly written by Emily.
Emily asked to see the letters. The handwriting was hers, but the content had been assembled from old reports and personal notes.
“What did he ask you to do?”
“Bring you to the train yard.”
Elena's voice shook. “He said Lily took my life.”
Emily stepped closer. “Lily took nothing from you.”
The teenager raised a pistol.
Sarah moved between them, but Emily gently pushed her aside. She told Elena about the altered hospital record, the missing eleven minutes, and the photograph that did not fit. She admitted she did not know whether her child lived.
“Then you don't know I'm lying,” Elena said.
“No. And I don't know you're telling the truth. But Victor wants us to solve that uncertainty by hurting each other.”
Elena lowered the weapon slightly.
Sniper fire shattered the window.
Sarah pulled them behind a wall. Victor's men entered through the rear corridor. Elena revealed a hidden passage beneath the nursery floor. She had been sent to trap them, but she no longer trusted Victor.
They escaped through tunnels leading to an old freight line. Elena carried a small tablet containing Victor's current communications. Priya, connected remotely, discovered that Victor was preparing to leave the country using a Genesis identity.
The identity belonged to Daniel Cross.
If Victor succeeded, Daniel would be blamed for Meridian's remaining crimes while Victor disappeared inside his face, records, and financial history.
Emily called Marcus. Federal custody had already transferred Daniel to a private transport team authorized by Deputy Director Ward before her arrest. The vehicle never reached the detention center.
Daniel had been taken.
Elena knew the train yard where Victor planned the exchange. She also knew why he needed Emily alive: Genesis could clone records, but only Emily's authorization phrase could make a replacement identity permanent across the poisoned network.
At the freight yard, they found Daniel tied inside a refrigerated railcar. Victor stood outside wearing Daniel's jacket and holding a new passport.
Lily was beside him.
Naomi's safe house had been attacked. She was injured, and Lily had been taken.
Victor held one child by the shoulder while looking at the other.
“Two daughters,” he said to Emily. “One born from you, one stolen for you. Choose which one leaves.”
Emily's heart pounded, but she saw details Victor missed. Lily was tapping her fingers against her leg in the rhythm of the red door song. Elena had moved closer to a rail switch. Daniel was slowly cutting his restraints against a broken bolt.
Emily raised her hands.
“I choose neither,” she said.
Then the freight train began to move.
In the tunnel beneath the maternity home, Elena revealed she had been taught Emily's habits for months. She knew how Emily took tea, which hand she used to unlock a door, and the song she hummed while grading papers. Victor wanted the girl to feel stolen before she ever met Emily.
“He said you replaced me because I was difficult,” Elena whispered.
Emily stopped walking. “Children are not replaced because they are difficult. They are abandoned by adults who fail them.”
Elena looked away, unable to accept comfort without suspecting a trap.
Sarah recognized the reaction. Nursery children were rewarded for attachment and punished when it became inconvenient. They learned to test every kindness until it broke. Sarah told Emily not to promise forever. Promise breakfast, a safe room, and the next honest conversation.
At the freight yard, Elena admitted she had sent Victor a false location before guiding Emily there. That was why his guards were thin. Her betrayal had begun before she raised the pistol; she simply had not yet decided whom she was betraying.
Daniel, tied in the railcar, managed to tap a code against the metal wall. Lily answered with her fingers. Father and daughter communicated through the game that had endangered her, turning it into a tool for escape.

Emily saw Victor watching their silent exchange with jealousy. He had Lily's blood but none of her trust. That wound made him reckless.
When he demanded Emily choose between the girls, she understood the choice itself was his final weapon. Refusing it was the only victory he could not predict.
