Chapter 12 - WHAT EMILY CHOSE

The words froze Emily at the railing.
For years she had believed Lily was the child she delivered. Now she knew there had been another baby, a stillborn daughter Daniel had erased from her life. Victor claimed to know where that child had been taken.
“Help me,” he said, “and I will show you.”
Below him, server fans roared. The trace countdown showed four minutes.
Daniel shouted that Victor was lying. Naomi said Meridian had often retained bodies and tissue records to manipulate families. The possibility was cruel enough to be believable.
Emily grabbed Victor's wrist.
Daniel stared at her in disbelief.
She did not pull Victor to safety. She held him long enough for Sarah to fasten a cable around his arm. Together they dragged him onto the platform and restrained him.
“I want answers,” Emily said. “That is not the same as mercy.”
Victor laughed despite the blood on his face. “You always were my best accountant.”
Ward triggered an archive purge from the emergency exit. Fire doors began closing section by section. Marcus, bruised but alive, chased her into the records hall. Priya continued the trace while Naomi stabilized Sarah.
Daniel admitted the hospital had cremated Emily's stillborn child under a false name. He had arranged it because Meridian monitored death records. He did not know where the ashes were sent.
Another theft committed in the name of safety.
Emily could not forgive him in that moment. She also could not stop loving the man who had raised Lily, bled for them, and lied to them.
The trace reached completion.
Across the world, Meridian accounts froze and location beacons activated. Priya transmitted the evidence to multiple courts, journalists, and international agencies at once. No single corrupt official could contain it.
Victor's confidence finally broke.
Then the archive purge ignited the paper vaults.
Smoke rolled through the chamber. They had to escape through the subway tunnel before the lower servers exploded. Daniel carried Sarah. Marcus returned with Ward in custody, her hands bound with her own belt.
Victor walked between Emily and Priya under guard.
At the last junction, the tunnel divided. One route led to the street. The other led to an underground river exit.
Victor suddenly triggered a small transmitter hidden in a dental crown. The tunnel lights died. An explosion separated the group.
Emily woke on wet concrete with Lily beside her. Daniel and Naomi were nearby. Across a wall of fallen stone, Marcus shouted that he had Sarah, Priya, and Ward.
Victor was missing.
The river tunnel filled rapidly with smoke. Daniel led Emily's group toward the surface. They emerged through a storm drain as the courthouse windows erupted above them.
Emergency vehicles surrounded the district. Honest agents, alerted by Priya's evidence package, took Naomi to an ambulance and placed Daniel under temporary arrest for his role in Meridian.
Lily clung to him.
“Are you going away?” she asked.
Daniel looked at Emily before answering. “I have to tell the truth.”
Emily touched Lily's shoulder. “And then we decide what comes next.”
For the first time, Daniel did not make the decision for them.
As agents led him away, Emily's phone recovered service. Hundreds of messages arrived.
One was from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of a small white urn sitting on a wooden table.
The message read:
YOUR DAUGHTER WAS NOT CREMATED.
During the escape, Ward tried to persuade Marcus that the exposed network would destabilize governments. Marcus replied that stability built on stolen children deserved to fall.
The archive fire illuminated shelves of paper identities before consuming them. Sarah stopped at one cabinet and removed a single photograph of the woman who had cared for her during her first Nursery placement. She did not know whether the woman was an agent or someone who loved her, and now she might never know.
Emily helped her carry that uncertainty. It resembled her own grief: a life could be false and still contain real affection.
At the tunnel collapse, Lily became separated from Naomi for less than a minute. She screamed until Emily crawled through smoke and found her. Emily promised that no secret plan would ever again separate them without Lily understanding why.
Daniel heard the promise. “Even if the truth scares her?” he asked.
“Especially then.”
Outside, cameras captured Ward in handcuffs and Daniel being arrested. Reporters shouted questions. Emily saw how quickly public stories formed from incomplete images: corrupt official, heroic agent, fugitive husband, kidnapped child. The truth was more difficult and therefore less attractive.
Before Daniel entered the vehicle, he gave Emily the wedding ring he had used for secret signals. “I don't know whether I have the right to wear this,” he said.
Emily closed his hand around it. “That decision belongs to both of us. For once, wait.”
May you like
He nodded.
Then the unknown message arrived with the urn, proving the courthouse victory had ended only the visible part of the war.
