Chapter 7 - THE PRICE OF A CHILD

Emily stepped between Lily and the screen.

Victor spoke as if negotiating a business acquisition. He claimed Lily's mother, a Meridian analyst named Anna Vale, had hidden the child after discovering Nursery. Anna was killed during the safe-house raid. Daniel stole the infant before Victor could recover her.

“You call that recovery?” Emily asked. “You mean ownership.”

Victor smiled. “Blood is ownership in every system that matters.”

Daniel lifted his head. “Don't listen to him. Anna is alive.”

Victor struck him, but the words had already changed the room.

Sarah demanded proof. Daniel said Anna had escaped and entered federal protection under a new identity. Marcus's face tightened. He knew the name but refused to speak over an unsecured channel.

Victor gave them two hours to bring Lily to an abandoned courthouse. In exchange, Daniel would be released and Nursery's active list would remain sealed. If they refused, he would publish the identities of every child and witness created by the program.

The screen went dark.

Priya examined the servers. Emily's failsafe could erase Nursery's identity maps and freeze Meridian's accounts, but activating it required three elements: Lily's genetic key, Emily's original authorization phrase, and Daniel's architect token.

They had the first. Emily could possibly recover the second. Daniel still possessed the third.

Sarah proposed attacking the courthouse. Marcus argued Victor expected that. Emily listened until they began speaking about Lily as if she were equipment.

“No one uses her again,” she said.

She took Lily into a side room and explained as much truth as a six-year-old could hold. Lily asked whether Daniel had stolen her. Emily said he had saved her from one danger and placed her inside another.

“Do you still love him?” Lily asked.

Emily could not answer.

Lily opened her stuffed ladybug and pulled at a loose seam. A tiny metal cylinder fell into her palm.

“Daddy told me only open it when Mommy tells the whole truth.”

Inside was Daniel's architect token.

He had never carried it. He had hidden it with Lily all along.

Priya connected the token to the servers. A map appeared showing Meridian cells across five countries. One location flashed near the courthouse, but another flashed beneath Daniel's consulting office.

Emily realized Victor's hostage video might be staged. The industrial room could be anywhere. Daniel's bruises were real, but the transmission delay suggested he was closer than they thought.

Marcus contacted a trusted judge to authorize a raid, only to learn the judge had died in a boating accident that morning. Every safe channel was collapsing.

Then Thomas Bell's access card triggered upstairs. Someone was descending.

Sarah prepared an ambush. The elevator opened.

Daniel stumbled out alone.

Emily froze.

His hands were untied. His face was bloody, but he carried a gun.

Lily ran toward him. Emily caught her.

Daniel stopped several feet away.

“How did you escape?” Marcus asked.

Daniel looked at the servers, the token, and the open neonatal file.

“I didn't,” he said.

The elevator doors closed behind him.

A red light began blinking on his jacket.

Priya shouted, “Bomb!”

Daniel tore the device free and threw it into the vault as Marcus slammed the steel door. The explosion lifted everyone from the floor.

When Emily regained consciousness, the servers were burning and Daniel was gone.

On the wall, written in his blood, were four words:

DO NOT FOLLOW MY VOICE.

While they debated Victor's ultimatum, Emily studied the courthouse schematics and noticed Daniel had marked one corridor with a hand-drawn star. It corresponded to a witness room with no electronic surveillance. She remembered him drawing the same star on maps during family road trips to mark places where they could stop safely.

Even his harmless habits had been training.

Lily asked to speak to Victor. Every adult refused. She crossed her arms and said, “He keeps talking about me like I can't hear.”

Emily allowed a brief recorded message but kept the camera off. Lily said, “You don't know my favorite color, my teacher's name, or how I sleep when I have a bad dream. You know my blood. That is not the same as knowing me.”

Victor did not respond for several seconds. Then he said Anna had once spoken with the same stubbornness.

The moment revealed something useful: he wanted Lily to recognize him, not merely unlock a system. His vanity created emotional delays they could exploit.

Daniel's sudden arrival deepened every suspicion. Emily noticed his shoes carried white hospital dust, proving he had traveled through an unfinished service corridor rather than the public floors. She also saw a fresh puncture beneath his collar, likely the tracker. He was warning them with his body before he wrote the message in blood.

When the bomb exploded, Emily shielded Lily and felt Daniel's arm cover both of them. For one instant, despite everything, they moved like the family they had believed themselves to be. Then smoke separated them again.
