Chapter 8 - The Grave

Thomas Carter had been buried beside Ethan’s mother in a private family cemetery behind an old stone chapel.
Ethan had visited dozens of times.
He never imagined evidence lay beneath the ground.
Federal agents searched without disturbing the grave itself.
A ground scan found a metal object beneath the stone bench beside Thomas’s headstone.
Inside a waterproof tube were documents.
Thomas had hidden them before his death.
The folder was labeled:
PROJECT ELISE.
Sophie’s middle name.
Ethan opened it.
Ross stopped him.
“We document first.”
“That’s my daughter’s name.”
“And evidence.”
Ethan stared until Ross relented enough to photograph the seal and allow him to read beside investigators.
The first page contained DNA results.
Thomas Carter.
Ethan Carter.
Sophie Carter.
Biological relationships confirmed.
Sophie was Ethan’s daughter.
Again.
But there was a fourth profile.
Unknown female.
Relationship to Sophie:
MATERNAL HALF-SIBLING.
Ethan froze.
“Laura had another child?”
Ross turned pages.
There was no name.
Only a code.
SUBJECT 17A.
Date of birth:
Six years before Sophie.
Ethan did the math.
Laura would have been twenty-two.
Before they met.
He whispered, “She had a daughter.”
Brooks looked at him.
“Possibly.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
The next page answered part of it.
Haven House admission records.
Laura Bennett, age twenty-two.
Pregnant.
No family support listed.
Infant delivered.
Female.
Child transferred forty-eight hours later.
Mother informed infant died from respiratory failure.
But the infant had not died.
The child had been placed into Haven House.
Laura discovered the truth years later while working for Grayhaven.
That discovery led her into the records.
Led her to Evelyn.
Led her to Richard.
Led, eventually, to her death.
Ethan sat on the stone bench beside his father’s grave.
Laura had carried that grief alone.
A daughter she believed dead.
Then discovered alive.
Why hadn’t she told him?
The answer was in Thomas’s handwritten letter.
Ethan,
If you find this, Laura is probably gone and I have probably failed both of you.
Before you hate her for keeping secrets, hate me first.
I asked her not to tell you.
They were watching you.
They needed a legitimate Carter child because your family controls something you have never been told exists.
Ethan looked toward Ross.
“What?”
Ross shook his head.
The Carter family did not become wealthy because of Carter Industries.
Carter Industries became wealthy because your grandfather was one of five custodians of the original Haven assets.
I tried to leave.
They do not permit leaving.
I spent thirty years dismantling what I could.
When Laura discovered her first daughter had survived, Grayhaven realized Sophie gave them a way to control both the Bennett bloodline and the Carter voting trust.
I altered Sophie’s identity file to make her unusable.
Laura helped me.
That bought time.
But once I died, the protection weakened.
Do not trust probate records.
Do not trust the Carter Family Trust.
And do not assume Madison is outside this.
Ethan stopped.
He looked up.
Madison.
His sister.
His best friend.
The woman currently sitting with Sophie.
He was on his feet before anyone spoke.
Ross grabbed his arm.
“Think.”
“My daughter is with Madison.”
“The letter doesn’t say she’s involved.”
“It says don’t assume she isn’t.”
Ethan called.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Security at the hotel answered.
Madison and Sophie had left twenty minutes earlier.
Ethan’s heart stopped.
“With whom?”
The security officer hesitated.
“Mr. Carter, your sister said you authorized it.”
“Where did they go?”
“She showed us a message from your number.”
Ethan hadn’t sent one.
Ross was already mobilizing agents.
Ethan demanded surveillance footage.
Madison appeared on camera holding Sophie’s hand.
She looked frightened.
A dark sedan waited outside.
May you like
A man opened the rear door.
Richard Blake.
