Chapter 11 - Emily

Richard’s video contained hidden metadata.
A GPS fragment.
Ross traced it to an old lakeside summer camp in Vermont.
This time Ethan agreed to remain behind the tactical team until the site was secured.
Not because Ross convinced him.
Because Sophie’s safety mattered more than his rage.
Agents entered shortly before sunrise.
No gunfire.
No resistance.
Then Brooks radioed.
“We have the child.”
Ethan ran.
Sophie came through the cabin door.
“Daddy!”
He fell to his knees and caught her.
She wrapped herself around him.
He buried his face in her hair.
“You’re okay.”
“Yes.”
“You’re okay.”
He repeated it until he believed it.
Madison emerged next.
Bandage around her upper arm.
Ethan looked at her.
“You took my daughter.”
“I know.”
“You trusted Richard.”
“I know.”
“I want to be furious with you.”
“You should be.”
He hugged her anyway.
Richard came out with his hands raised.
Federal agents immediately restrained him.
Ethan watched.
Richard looked exhausted.
“Before you decide I’m the villain, talk to the girl.”
Ethan looked toward the cabin.
A girl stood in the doorway.
Twelve years old.
Dark blond hair.
Green eyes.
Laura’s eyes.
Ethan felt something inside him stop.
Emily.
She looked at Sophie.
Then at Ethan.
“You’re Laura’s husband.”
Not Mom.
Laura.
Ethan nodded.
“I was.”
Emily studied him.
“Did she really die?”
“Yes.”
Emily’s expression barely moved.
Someone had taught her how not to show pain.
“I thought so.”
Ethan approached slowly.
“She looked for you.”
Emily’s jaw tightened.
“I know.”
“She found you.”
“She came twice.”
Only twice.
Ethan understood the accusation immediately.
“She was trying to get you out.”
Emily laughed without humor.
“That’s what everyone says.”
“Who is everyone?”
“People who need me to cooperate.”
Sophie slipped her hand into Ethan’s.
Emily watched.
“You’re Sophie.”
Sophie nodded.
“You’re my sister?”
Emily looked away.
“Apparently.”
The moment should have been emotional.
Warm.
Healing.
Instead it was tense.
Complicated.
Real.
Richard was questioned separately.
Madison explained he had arrived at the hotel with evidence someone planned to seize Sophie through a forged federal emergency custody order.
He convinced Madison to leave before the order arrived.
He was right.
Agents later intercepted forged paperwork naming Sophie as a protected witness requiring immediate relocation.
Someone intended to remove her legally.
Or legally enough to avoid resistance.
The attackers found Richard’s vehicle near the farmhouse.
Madison was grazed by a bullet.
Richard returned fire.
They escaped.
Ethan hated that the man he wanted arrested had probably saved his daughter.
Emily refused to speak to investigators until she spoke to Ethan alone.
They sat outside the cabin.
She held an old metal bracelet.
Laura’s bracelet.
Ethan recognized it.
“Where did you get that?”
“She gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Last time she came.”
Emily looked toward the lake.
“She told me she was going to bring me home.”
Ethan swallowed.
“She meant it.”
“She never came back.”
“She died.”
“I know.”
Emily’s voice trembled for the first time.
“The people here told me she chose Sophie.”
“No.”
“They said she could only save one daughter.”
“That’s not true.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I knew Laura.”
“You didn’t know she had me.”
That landed cleanly.
Ethan had no answer.
Emily looked at him.
“She lied to you too.”
“Yes.”
Emily seemed surprised by his honesty.
Ethan continued.
“She kept things from me. I wish she hadn’t. But I think she was scared.”
“She should have been.”
“Why?”
Emily looked toward the agents.
“Because she found the Vale ledger.”
Ethan’s pulse quickened.
“What is that?”
“A list of everyone who ever held the title.”
“Adrian Vale?”
“Yes.”
“Do you know who holds it now?”
Emily nodded.
Ethan leaned forward.
“Who?”
Before she answered, Richard shouted from across the clearing.
“Don’t!”
Agents restrained him.
May you like
Emily looked directly at Ethan.
“The current Vale is a Carter.”
