Chapter 14 - The Man Behind the Door

DNA testing was immediate.
Emily’s stored profile was compared against a sample found in Thomas Carter’s archived medical materials and genealogical markers within the family.
The result did not prove Edward’s paternity directly without Edward’s sample.
But it proved something almost as disturbing.
Emily was genetically related to Ethan through both sides.
Maternal half-sister relationship to Sophie through Laura.
And probable paternal first cousin relationship through the Carter line.
If Edward was her father, Sophie and Emily were not only half-sisters through Laura.
They were also cousins through Ethan and Edward.
The family tree collapsed inward.
Ethan understood why Laura had hidden so much.
Her first pregnancy had not been random.
She had been twenty-two.
Edward was older.
He may have used another identity.
Maybe Laura never knew who he truly was.
Emily sat in silence.
Sophie held her hand.
“You’re still my sister.”
Emily looked at her.
“That family chart is weird.”
Sophie shrugged.
“You’re still my sister.”
Emily laughed unexpectedly.
Then cried.
Ethan looked away to give her privacy.
Later she told him the name she remembered for her father.
Adam Vale.
Not Edward Cole.
He visited Haven House twice when she was young.
Always behind glass.
“He told me one day I would get everything they stole from him.”
“What did they steal?”
“His name.”
Ethan understood.
Thomas had hidden Edward.
Perhaps erased him legally.
Perhaps removed him from the Carter inheritance.
Maybe Edward built his entire life around reclaiming what he believed was his.
Brooks entered with urgent news.
Celeste had disappeared from federal protective housing.
No forced entry.
She left willingly.
Security footage showed her entering a car at 2:17 a.m.
Driver hidden.
Twenty minutes later, Richard received a message.
COME HOME.
Attached was a photograph of Celeste sitting across from a man.
Only the man’s hand was visible.
On his finger was Thomas Carter’s signet ring.
Ethan recognized it.
Thomas had been buried wearing that ring.
Or so Ethan believed.
They exhumed the grave under court authority.
The casket had been disturbed years earlier.
Thomas’s ring was missing.
So was something else.
A sealed envelope documented in funeral records but never listed in probate.
Ethan felt rage boiling through him.
Even death had become another hiding place.
Richard agreed to bait the sender.
He replied.
WHERE?
Coordinates arrived.
The Carter mansion.
Ethan stared.
“He wants us home.”
Ross prepared a tactical operation.
Ethan refused to let Sophie or Emily anywhere near the estate.
Both girls were moved to a federal safe site.
Madison stayed with them.
Before Ethan left, Sophie hugged him.
“Come back.”
“I will.”
“Promise?”
Ethan hesitated.
Laura had taught him never to make promises about things beyond his control.
But six-year-olds deserved certainty sometimes.
“I promise.”
The mansion was dark when they arrived.
No exterior lights.
No security system.
Someone had disabled everything.
Ethan entered with agents.
The silver suitcase was back in the foyer.
Evidence had been removed from police custody.
Impossible.
Yet there it was.
On top sat Laura’s photograph.
Ethan picked it up.
New writing appeared beneath Laura’s original message.
WELCOME HOME, BROTHER.
A light switched on upstairs.
Footsteps.
Slow.
A man descended.
Late forties.
Tall.
Gray beginning at his temples.
He looked enough like Thomas that Ethan knew before anyone spoke.
Edward.
His older half-brother.
Celeste walked behind him.
Alive.
Terrified.
Edward smiled.
“Ethan.”
Ethan stared.
“Where did you get my father’s ring?”
Edward lifted his hand.
“Our father.”
“You’re Edward.”
“I was.”
“What are you now?”
Edward smiled.
“You already know.”
Agents raised weapons.
Edward seemed amused.
“You brought federal protection into a house whose security architecture I designed.”
Ross stiffened.
Edward clicked a remote.
Metal shutters slammed over the doors.
Communications died.
The mansion locked down.
Edward looked at Ethan.
“I don’t want to hurt you.”
“You tried to take Sophie.”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Edward’s smile vanished.
“That is why you are still alive.”
Ethan’s anger paused.
Edward continued.
“You think I am Vale.”
“Aren’t you?”
“I inherited the title.”
“That sounds like yes.”
“I inherited a corpse.”
Edward looked toward Celeste.
“Grayhaven stopped obeying Vale years ago.”
Richard whispered.
“That’s impossible.”
Edward laughed.
“You worked there and still believed the chairman ran the company.”
He faced Ethan.
“Laura found out.”
Ethan’s pulse jumped.
“Found out what?”
“That Vale was a distraction.”
“Who killed her?”
Edward looked almost sad.
“Someone you trusted enough to let near her grave.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“Name them.”
Edward reached inside his coat.
Agents aimed weapons.
He removed a photograph.
Laura standing beside Thomas.
Richard.
Evelyn.
And one more person.
Daniel Ross.
May you like
Ethan looked at the federal investigator beside him.
Ross’s face went blank.
