Chapter 12 - Bloodline

Every instinct in Ethan demanded a name.

Emily refused.

“Why?”

“Because I want proof first.”

“Proof of what?”

“That you aren’t him.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You think I’m Adrian Vale?”

“I think the position passes through families. I think Carter is one of them.”

“I’m trying to destroy Grayhaven.”

“So was Thomas.”

“My father?”

Emily nodded.

“Until he wasn’t.”

Ethan felt a chill.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know. The files contradict each other.”

Ross entered the conversation despite Emily’s objections.

“The Carter family trust predates Grayhaven by decades.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You knew?”

“We found documents overnight.”

“Show me.”

The trust had been created in 1948.

Its declared purpose was philanthropic support for displaced children after World War II.

Over time, subsidiary trusts multiplied.

Records became private.

Offshore.

Opaque.

Thomas inherited voting authority at age thirty.

Ethan inherited it automatically when Thomas died.

Except Ethan had never knowingly exercised it.

“You signed annual trust acknowledgments,” Ross said.

“I signed estate paperwork.”

“Contained within it.”

Ethan felt sick.

Someone had buried authority inside documents he barely read because lawyers assured him they were routine.

“What authority?”

“Potential control over dormant Haven assets.”

“How much?”

“We don’t know.”

Emily said, “Twenty-three billion.”

Ross looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because they taught me.”

“Who?”

“Haven.”

She explained that older children were educated in finance, languages, identity management, and legal structures.

Not all were prisoners.

Some became operators.

Some were promised wealth.

Some were terrified into obedience.

Emily had been trained to authenticate access to certain trusts.

Laura discovered her in the program.

“She told me I wasn’t what they said I was,” Emily said.

“What did they say you were?” Ethan asked.

“An heir.”

“To what?”

“The Bennett position.”

Laura’s family, apparently, had also been connected to Haven decades earlier.

Two bloodlines.

Carter.

Bennett.

Sophie carried both through Ethan and Laura.

That made her uniquely valuable.

Emily carried Bennett access but not Carter access.

Together, the sisters could potentially control or expose records no single operator could reach.

“That’s why Sophie was being moved,” Ethan said.

Richard, still handcuffed nearby, nodded.

“Lisbon holds one of the old authentication banks.”

Celeste spoke from behind an agent.

“Richard told me we needed to get Sophie there before Vale’s people did.”

Ethan turned on her.

“So you thought kidnapping my child was protection?”

“I thought you were compromised.”

“By whom?”

“Your family.”

Madison looked offended.

Celeste laughed bitterly.

“You think this ends with Richard and me? You people have been inside this system for generations.”

Ethan looked at Emily.

“Name the current Vale.”

Emily hesitated.

Then removed a folded paper from her bracelet.

A fragment of the ledger.

Names.

Dates.

Symbols.

At the bottom:

VALE SUCCESSION 2014.

T.C.

Thomas Carter.

Ethan stopped breathing.

His father had held the title.

The next line:

SUCCESSOR DESIGNATED.

E.C.

Everyone looked at Ethan.

He stared.

“No.”

Richard spoke quietly.

“That’s why Laura was terrified.”

Ethan’s voice hardened.

“I never agreed to anything.”

“You didn’t need to,” Emily said. “It was hereditary.”

Ross asked, “Does E.C. mean Ethan Carter?”

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Madison whispered.

“Could be someone else.”

Celeste’s eyes went wide.

Then she looked at Ethan with sudden horror.

“What?”

Ethan asked.

Celeste backed away.

“I just remembered something Richard told me years ago.”

Richard’s expression changed.

“Celeste, stop.”

She ignored him.

“He said Laura discovered Thomas didn’t have two children.”

Ethan stared.

“What are you talking about?”

May you like

Celeste pointed toward Madison.

“He had three.”
