THE STAIN BENEATH THE VOWS

Anna had entered through a service tunnel built during Prohibition. Ethan sent her a coded message before the wedding, instructing her to come if the east-wing lights appeared before dawn.

Together they disabled the house alarm and returned to the clinic. Dr. Vale lay unconscious near the elevator. Margaret was gone.

Ethan sat against the wall, struggling to breathe. Claire removed her mask and held it to his face until his eyes focused.

Anna stood several feet away. For the first time in twelve years, she and Ethan saw each other without Margaret between them.

“You left me,” Ethan whispered.

“No,” Anna said. “She took me.”

There was no time for reunion. Margaret had escaped with the medical case and the pregnancy evidence. Ethan copied the clinic files while Anna searched the cabinets.

Behind a false panel, Anna found annual photographs of a dark-haired boy growing from infancy to adolescence. The most recent was taken six months ago outside a boarding school in Maine.

Written beneath it was a name: Noah Vale.

Dr. Vale regained consciousness and began to cry. Noah was Anna and Ethan’s son. Margaret had placed him with Vale’s sister and used the child’s survival to control the doctor. Noah did not have the family disease. His blood had never cured anyone.

“Then why continue?” Claire asked.

Vale looked toward the shelves. “Because the program stopped being about a cure. Margaret sold genetic matches to wealthy families. Children, embryos, identities—whatever they needed.”

The records could destroy the Blackwood Foundation and imprison everyone involved. But when Ethan checked the copied drive, every file was encrypted.

Vale knew only half the password. Margaret carried the other half in a locket.

Police sirens approached the estate. Claire felt relief until Vale shook his head.

“Those are not police responding to you. Margaret called them.”

She had reported that Ethan, during a psychotic episode, attacked his doctor and abducted his pregnant wife. The behavioral records in the clinic supported her claim.
