Ethan claimed he remembered nothing unusual. Claire no longer accepted immediate answers.
Under the supervision of a trauma specialist, he underwent a recorded interview. Fragments surfaced: Margaret standing over Anna in the clinic; a newborn crying; Charles shouting that the child was healthy; and Ethan, twenty years old and drugged, carrying a wrapped infant toward a waiting car.
He had not merely lost Noah. He had helped Margaret take him.
Anna watched the recording in silence. When it ended, she struck Ethan across the face.
He did not defend himself.
Then she collapsed into his arms and wept for the years stolen from all of them.
The recovered files proved Ethan had been heavily sedated, but guilt did not obey medical evidence. He moved into a guest room and offered Claire an annulment.
Claire refused to decide while they were still living inside Margaret’s version of events.
Ruiz traced one of the network’s payments to a private island clinic registered under the name Vesper House. Noah’s school records contained the same name as an emergency guardian.
The foundation board called an urgent meeting. Its members expected Ethan to resign and appoint Margaret’s longtime deputy, Graham Pike. Instead, Claire attended with Anna and federal counsel. She presented enough evidence to freeze the foundation’s accounts.
Pike warned that doing so would end medical support for hundreds of innocent children. Claire created a protected fund for legitimate care and blocked every private transfer.
For the first time, Margaret’s machine stopped moving money.
Minutes later, every screen in the boardroom lit up with a live video.
Margaret sat beside Noah in an unknown room. The boy was pale but unharmed.
“Restore the accounts,” Margaret said, “or he learns exactly what his father did on the night he was born.”
