Chapter 12 - Noah’s Choice)

The broadcast lasted forty-three seconds, but Ruiz extracted a church bell, a train horn, and reflected lettering from a window. The clues pointed to an abandoned Blackwood laboratory near Portland.
Claire suspected misdirection. Anna did not care. She left before dawn with a stolen copy of the coordinates.
Ethan followed her. Claire followed them both.
The laboratory was empty except for a chair, a camera, and a sealed envelope addressed to Ethan. Inside was the original certificate from his secret marriage to Anna. Unlike the copy in the family files, it bore a county stamp.
The marriage had been legal.
That meant Ethan’s marriage to Claire was invalid.
Margaret’s purpose became clear. If Anna was legally Ethan’s wife, Claire had no claim to the trust. Margaret could challenge every action Claire had taken and unfreeze the accounts.
Anna stared at the certificate. “She kept me alive because she needed me to exist whenever Ethan married someone else.”
Claire felt her marriage vanish beneath her feet. Ethan reached for her, but she stepped away.
Federal counsel later confirmed the certificate was authentic. Claire’s legal status changed, but her testimony and the criminal evidence did not. Margaret had won a procedural battle, not the war.
Anna filed immediately for divorce and waived any claim to the estate. The court scheduled an emergency hearing.
Before it began, a teenage boy entered the courthouse with Detective Ruiz.
Noah had escaped during a fuel stop by locking Margaret in a gas-station restroom and calling the number Anna had hidden in his school file months earlier.
The reunion was quiet. Anna touched his face as if afraid he might dissolve. Ethan stood back until Noah crossed the room and embraced him.
Margaret was arrested twenty miles away.
For one breathless hour, it seemed the nightmare had ended.

Then Margaret asked to speak privately with Claire.
“You think Noah was the reason I chose you,” she said through the glass. “He was only the rehearsal.”
