Chapter 6 - The Test Claire Never Took)

Margaret had known they were there because the elevator logged every use. She did not shout or threaten. She poured herself water and explained the truth as if conducting a board meeting.
Claire’s blood had been taken from a glass cut during a dinner at the estate. Dr. Vale tested it and discovered that Claire carried a rare genetic marker compatible with Ethan’s. Margaret had encouraged the marriage after learning this.
The positive pregnancy result came from blood collected from Claire’s discarded wedding-day tissues. She was perhaps four weeks pregnant.
Ethan stepped between them. “You chose her for me.”
“You chose her first,” Margaret said. “I merely approved.”
The Blackwood fertility program had attempted to treat a lethal blood disorder running through Charles’s family. Ethan carried the mutation but did not have the disease. Researchers believed a child conceived by two compatible carriers could produce stem cells capable of curing affected relatives.
The science had been uncertain. The methods had been criminal.
Anna’s baby had been taken after birth. Margaret claimed the child died during treatment. Ethan demanded proof.
“There is none you would accept,” she said.
Claire asked what TRANSFER meant.
Margaret’s eyes rested on her abdomen. “A medical procedure. The pregnancy must be protected from stress and outside interference.”
“You mean imprisoned,” Claire said.
Dr. Vale quietly moved toward the elevator controls. Ethan struck his hand away. The medical case fell open, scattering syringes.
Margaret pressed an alarm.
Steel shutters dropped over the clinic doors. Gas began hissing through ceiling vents.
Ethan grabbed two respirator masks from the wall. There was only one filter cartridge. He fitted it over Claire’s face and told her to climb into a maintenance duct behind the refrigerator.
“Come with me.”
“I’ll shut down the gas.”
“Ethan—”
“This time, you are not the key. You are my wife.”
Claire crawled into darkness while voices blurred behind her. She heard a struggle, glass breaking, and Margaret screaming her son’s name.
The duct opened into the old wine cellar. Claire stumbled out, dizzy but conscious. In her hand she still held Anna’s ledger page.
Above her, someone walked across the cellar and stopped at the hidden door.
Claire raised a broken bottle.

The door opened.
Anna stood there.
