Chapter 6 - Nine O'Clock)

The emergency hearing took place in a sealed courtroom because the children were medically fragile and because fifty reporters blocked the courthouse steps.

Claire wore a borrowed black dress beneath her hospital coat. She had slept for twenty-three minutes in the car. Every movement pulled at her stitches, but when she entered the courtroom beside Ruth, she kept her shoulders level.

Ryan sat at the opposing table in the same navy suit. A tear in one cuff exposed the white lining.

Claire remembered the wool caught in the clinic tunnel.

Vanessa was absent.

Ryan's attorney, Martin Kessler, presented first. He spoke gently, as if kindness could disguise the shape of his argument. Claire had concealed a vast inheritance from her husband. She had suffered a traumatic delivery. She had displayed paranoia, secretly summoned corporate security, and then left two critically ill newborns during the night. Ryan, Kessler said, sought only temporary authority to ensure continuity of care at Northstar Children's Center.

"Why Northstar?" Judge Helena Ortiz asked.

"It has a specialized respiratory program."

"St. Catherine's is ranked above it."

"Mrs. Cole's family ownership creates a conflict."

Ruth rose. "The conflict is Mr. Cole's consulting agreement with Northstar, which paid him two million dollars through an offshore entity."

Kessler objected. Judge Ortiz allowed Ruth to continue.

Ruth presented the forged transfer, the altered blood type, and the video from the coat. She did not identify the unseen board member because the investigation remained open. She did show Ryan's statement that he would blame Claire after a manufactured incident lowered Vale Crown's value.

For the first time, the judge looked directly at Ryan.

"Did you make that statement?"

Kessler whispered urgently. Ryan answered, "The recording is manipulated."

"Did you submit a transfer form bearing your wife's signature yesterday?"

"She authorized me verbally."

"While unconscious?"

"Before the delivery."

Ruth placed Claire's photograph of the handwritten list on the evidence screen. Get Claire's signature while medicated.

Ryan's expression did not change, but his right hand disappeared beneath the table.

Claire had seen him hide that hand before, during negotiations when he believed the room was turning against him. He pressed his thumbnail into his palm until anger became pain he could control.

Judge Ortiz recessed for ten minutes.

In the corridor, Ryan approached Claire before security could stop him.

"Do you think your grandfather can erase what you did?" he murmured.

"What did I do?"

"You married me under a false identity. You hid property. You recorded private conversations. When this is over, people will see you as a spoiled liar who used two sick babies to protect an empire."

"You forged my signature."

"Prove I held the pen."

"You tried to send Noah incompatible plasma."

For the first time, genuine shock crossed his face.

It lasted less than a second, but Claire saw it.

Ryan knew about the transfer scheme. He knew about the planned incident. He had not known the exact method used against Noah.

Someone had accelerated the plan without telling him.

"Who changed the blood type?" Claire asked.

Ryan glanced toward the courthouse doors. "Ask your grandfather."

The judge returned and denied Ryan's request. She suspended his medical authority, prohibited any transfer, and issued a temporary protective order barring him from the NICU. She also referred the forged documents to the district attorney.

Claire did not feel triumphant. A temporary order was a locked door, not the end of the person trying to break through it.

Outside, Ruth gave a short statement. Claire said nothing until a reporter shouted, "Did you lie to your husband about being a Vale?"

Claire stopped.

"I protected private family information," she said. "My husband responded by attempting to seize medical control of our premature sons. Those facts are not morally equal, no matter how convenient it is to place them in the same sentence."

The clip spread before she reached the car.

At St. Catherine's, a crowd of nurses waited near the staff entrance. They did not applaud. They simply formed a quiet passage shielding Claire from the cameras.

Nurse Alvarez met her inside. "Oliver gained twelve grams. Noah had one apnea episode but recovered before intervention."

Claire let out the breath she had held since dawn.

"And Vanessa?"

"She was admitted to obstetrics an hour ago. Contractions."

Vanessa was thirty-three weeks pregnant. Stress could explain early labor, but Claire no longer accepted coincidence without examination.

She found Vanessa in a private room under guard. Vanessa gripped the rails as a monitor traced her baby's heartbeat.

"Ryan isn't answering," she said.

"He is under a protective order and investigation."

"He promised he would come."

Claire almost laughed, but the fear on Vanessa's face stopped her. She knew what it meant to stare at a monitor and listen for the life inside you.

"The doctors are trying to stop the contractions," Claire said. "You are in the right place."

Vanessa began to cry. "There is something you need to know. Ryan isn't the one who chose you."

"I know someone sent him."

"A woman recruited him seven years ago. She paid his debts, bought him clothes, taught him where you took your coffee. He was supposed to gain your trust and report whether you knew about your mother's files."

"Who was she?"

"He called her C."

Celeste North.

Claire said the name aloud. Vanessa shook her head.

"No. I saw a photograph once. She was younger than Celeste. Maybe fifty. Dark hair with a white streak near one temple. Ryan kept the picture inside a locked case."

Claire felt a memory stir. Her mother had developed a white streak in exactly that place after Claire's birth.

Impossible, she told herself.

Vanessa reached for her hand. "Ryan said the woman had been watching you since you were seventeen."

The fetal monitor suddenly slowed.

Nurses rushed in. Claire was pushed into the hall as a physician called for an emergency operating room.

Ryan appeared at the far end of the corridor despite the court order. He did not run toward Vanessa's room.

He ran toward the elevator carrying the red archival file from the clinic.
