Chapter 11 - Celeste's Last Confession)

Celeste did not run.
She waited in the chapel on the first floor, seated beneath a window of blue glass. Detective Bell found her there with both hands folded over her cane.
The implanted chip was visible beneath the skin of her left palm.
"Arthur gave it to me in the boardroom," she said. "He pressed it into my hand when the lights failed. I should have thrown it away."
"Instead, you entered the NICU," Claire said.
"To place it where his people would retrieve it."
"At my son's pump?"
Celeste closed her eyes. "I did not change the dose. I slipped the chip beneath the equipment label. When I left, the display was correct."
The chip was recovered exactly where she described. Forensic examination showed no blood except Arthur's and Celeste's. It carried biometric certificates for Arthur, Hargrove, and a deceased systems administrator.
Celeste had concealed evidence inside the NICU. Whether she had also endangered Oliver remained uncertain.
"Tell me everything," Claire said.
Bell cautioned Celeste that her statement could be used against her. Celeste smiled sadly. "At my age, Detective, consequences are the only honest company left."
She confessed to helping Evelyn investigate the trials. She confessed to falsifying the identification after the bridge crash. She confessed to knowing that the burned body was not Evelyn's.
"Your mother survived," Celeste told Claire. "A fisherman pulled her from the river. She believed Arthur had arranged the crash and that Elias had protected him. She asked me to identify the body as hers so she could disappear long enough to find Catherine and secure the evidence."
Claire could barely hear the chapel around her. "Where did she go?"
"I don't know. Evelyn contacted me twice. The last message came six months after the funeral. She said she had found Catherine but someone was following her. Then silence."
Catherine stood behind Claire. Her face had emptied of color.
"Laura told me Evelyn died in the crash," she said.
"Laura was protecting you," Celeste replied. "Or protecting herself."
"Did Elias know?" Claire asked.
"Not that Evelyn survived. He knew about the trials only after her disappearance. Arthur persuaded him that exposure would close hospitals and harm thousands of patients. Elias ordered an internal review. Arthur controlled it."
"And the payment to Laura?"
"Elias paid for evidence. Arthur intercepted the transfer message and replaced it with a threat. He made Laura believe Elias wanted Catherine gone."
Years of suspicion had been engineered with a few altered records and one forged message. The method never changed because it continued to work.
"Why help Arthur now?" Catherine demanded.
Celeste looked toward the chapel door. "Because he has my grandson."
Her grandson, Daniel North, was a medical resident in Boston. He had disappeared two days earlier. Celeste received a photograph of him bound to a chair and instructions to carry Arthur's chip into St. Catherine's. She was told to hide it on Oliver's pump. She had obeyed, believing the device would only be retrieved.
"Arthur knew the pump would be altered afterward," Claire said. "He wanted the security video to implicate you."
Celeste nodded. "And to kill a Vale child while the board questioned the family's control."
Detective Bell's team traced the message to a warehouse near the river. Police found the chair, rope, and Daniel's phone, but not Daniel.
Arthur remained at Vale Crown headquarters under warrant supervision. The evidence linked his chip to system access but did not prove he personally ordered an attempted murder. His attorneys called the implant stolen and Celeste unreliable.
Ryan, meanwhile, had been released pending a charging decision. Kessler argued that the stolen file and protective-order violation were nonviolent family matters. Ryan surrendered his passport and vanished from his registered apartment within an hour.
"He will go to Arthur," Catherine said.
"Or Arthur will remove him," Claire replied.
Vanessa provided the key.
From her hospital bed, she remembered a house Ryan used in New Jersey. He called it a corporate retreat, though no company records listed it. Once, she had seen a nursery inside with four empty cribs.
"Four?" Claire asked.
"He said the previous owner had quadruplets. I believed him."
The property belonged to a Northstar shell company. Its utility use spiked whenever a witness or record vanished from one of Arthur's investigations.
Bell prepared a raid, but Claire saw the flaw. If Arthur monitored police channels or hospital systems, he would know before officers crossed the state line. Daniel could be moved or killed.
"We need Arthur to believe he has won," she said.
The seventy-two-hour stay would expire the following night. Claire proposed announcing that Oliver's medication error had destroyed her confidence in Vale Crown. She would publicly accept a protected transfer to Northstar and agree not to oppose Arthur's stewardship.
Arthur would need Ryan alive to produce the parental authorization. He would need the chip to reactivate the forged records. And he would need a hidden facility ready to receive the twins.
"You are offering your sons as bait," Elias said.
"No. The twins never leave the secured floor. We send empty transport incubators with tracking equipment and a federal team."
"If Arthur suspects the deception, he may retaliate against Daniel."
"If we do nothing, Daniel still disappears and Arthur takes control tomorrow."
Catherine studied Claire. "You think like Mother."
"I barely remember how Mother thought."
"Maybe that is why you still trust action more than ghosts."
They announced the transfer at six in the evening.
At six seventeen, Ryan called Claire.
"I knew you would break," he said.
"Come sign the authorization."
"Send it to me."
"The court requires your physical presence. Nine tonight, St. Catherine's loading bay."
Ryan was silent.
Claire added the lie Catherine had suggested. "I found the third key."

His breath changed.
"Bring it," he said. "Come alone, and maybe your sons reach Northstar alive."
