Chapter 12 - The Empty Incubators)

At nine o'clock, two transport incubators rolled into the loading bay beneath St. Catherine's.
Blankets concealed their empty mattresses. Medical equipment created the expected silhouettes beneath the covers. Tiny speakers reproduced the soft irregular breathing of premature infants.
Claire watched from the command center three floors above. Oliver and Noah remained in the NICU with Dr. Shah, Nurse Alvarez, Elias, and six federal agents disguised as staff.
Catherine wore Claire's hospital coat and sat inside the transport ambulance. In low light, with her hair covered and her face turned away, she could pass for her sister. She carried the brass key in a monitoring case.
"This plan depends on Ryan seeing what he expects," Catherine said through her earpiece.
"That has always been his weakness," Claire replied.
Ryan arrived seven minutes late in a black sport utility vehicle. He wore a baseball cap and an unfamiliar jacket. Two Northstar transport workers stepped out with him. Facial recognition identified one as Arthur's private driver and the other as a respiratory therapist whose license had been suspended after an infant death.
Ryan signed the physical form. He did not approach the incubators closely.
"Where is Claire?" he asked.
Catherine lowered her head inside the ambulance. "Here."
"Show me the key."
She lifted the monitoring case.
Ryan relaxed. The convoy departed.
Federal vehicles followed beyond visual range. A tracking device broadcast from each incubator, from the key case, and from the ambulance chassis. For twelve miles, all three signals moved together.
Then the ambulance entered a tunnel beneath the Hudson.
Every signal vanished.
"Interference," an agent said.
"No," Claire replied. "They knew where the trackers were."
When the ambulance emerged, only the chassis signal returned. The incubators and Catherine were gone.
The driver continued toward Northstar as if nothing had happened.
Ryan's vehicle exited the tunnel by a restricted maintenance ramp. Cameras lost it beneath the river.
Claire called Catherine. No answer.
"Ryan built a transfer inside the transfer," Ruth said. "He switched vehicles underground."
The command center erupted. Federal agents converged on tunnel exits. Transit police searched maintenance corridors. The ambulance was stopped and found empty except for the driver.
Claire forced herself to look past fear. Ryan had known about the trackers, but he had asked specifically for the key. The key opened the clinic vault, which was now empty. Why risk everything for it?
Because the vault was not the destination. The number 317 connected it to Laura's storage unit. One key, two locks, perhaps three.
Claire opened the photograph of the old clinic and enlarged the brass emblem on the vault. Its lower branch formed a map of the original Vale property, including a narrow line running east toward the river.
"The clinic tunnel," she said. "We thought it ended at the boiler grate. What if it continues?"
Bell dispatched the nearest team.
Claire could not wait. She left the hospital with Ruth and two agents, carrying Evelyn's old phone. As they drove north, the cracked screen lit for the first time since Recording 1.
PLAY RECORDING 2 AT THE RIVER DOOR.
The phone knew where they were going, or someone with remote access knew.
At the clinic, police reopened the vault. The service tunnel descended beyond the grate through a section concealed by a false wall. It ran beneath the woods for nearly half a mile and ended at a steel door beside an underground dock.
The brass key opened it.
Recording 2 began automatically.
Evelyn appeared on the screen, holding a newborn wrapped in a green blanket.
"Catherine is alive," she said. "Laura brought her to me tonight. If Arthur finds us, this river route is the only exit he does not control. The door opens onto a boathouse owned by Vale Crown under the name Mercy Landing."
The video shifted. Behind Evelyn stood the same chair seen in the photograph of Celeste's kidnapped grandson.
Mercy Landing was not the New Jersey house. It was here.
Police forced the river door.
The boathouse beyond was lit. One empty transport incubator stood on the dock. The second lay on its side. Catherine's blood marked the floor, but Catherine was gone.
A boat engine roared outside.
Claire ran to the open doors. Fifty yards from shore, Ryan stood in a speedboat holding Catherine at gunpoint. Arthur Voss sat at the wheel. Daniel North lay bound near the stern.
Ryan raised the brass key.
"You always were one step late, Claire," he shouted.
May you like
Arthur pushed the throttle.
The boat turned toward the black river, where a waiting helicopter lowered itself over the water.
