Chapter 9 - Margaret’s Last Bargain

Margaret agreed to speak only after Daniel placed Carlo’s letter on the interview-room table.

Inspector Valli sat beside him. Margaret’s attorney objected immediately, but Margaret raised one hand.

“Leave us.”

The attorney refused at first.

Margaret repeated the command.

When the door closed, she looked at the laboratory report.

“I wondered when you would find that.”

Daniel’s voice was controlled.

“You used my genetic material.”

“I authorized a medical procedure intended to preserve the family line.”

“Without my knowledge.”

“You were unconscious for three weeks after the accident. The doctors did not know whether you would survive.”

“The procedure happened two years after the accident.”

Margaret looked toward the dark observation window.

Daniel continued.

“Who carried Christopher?”

“A woman selected through a private agency.”

“What happened to her?”

“She was compensated.”

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who raised him?”

“Thomas Bennett.”

“Why?”

“Your father discovered what I had done. He threatened to expose me and remove me from the trust. Thomas agreed to hide the child until Carlo could create legal protection.”

“Claire knew.”

“Eventually.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Did you imprison her because of the financial records or because she knew about Christopher?”

“Both.”

Margaret’s answer came without hesitation.

For the first time, Daniel saw her clearly.

She was not confused, manipulated, or controlled by Ethan. She had made deliberate decisions and justified each one through the language of family protection.

“You stole four years from her.”

“She intended to destroy everything generations of Morettis built.”

“She intended to expose theft.”

“I moved assets to prevent irresponsible distribution.”

“You used a children’s foundation.”

“I replaced every amount.”

“That does not make it legal.”

Margaret’s expression became impatient.

“You continue to see laws as moral boundaries. They are structures created by people with less responsibility than ours.”

“Our responsibility was to the children whose names you used.”

“My responsibility was to you.”

“No. It was to your control over me.”

Margaret looked away.

Daniel placed Claire’s note beside the laboratory report.

“Where is Ethan taking them?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Ethan stopped following my instructions months ago.”

“Why?”

“He learned Carlo had created a second trust.”

Daniel waited.

Margaret looked at him again.

“The public Moretti trust controls the properties and companies you know. The second trust holds something more valuable.”

“What?”

“Original ownership rights to the Bellagio shoreline, mineral access beneath the northern mountain, and voting authority over the private bank that finances most of our shipping operations.”

“Who controls it?”

“Christopher.”

Daniel felt the answer settle into place.

His father had transferred power to the child Margaret created illegally, turning her plan against her.

“That is why Ethan took him.”

“Yes.”

“And Claire?”

“Claire is Christopher’s legal guardian. Without her signature, Ethan cannot move certain assets.”

“Then she is alive because he still needs her.”

“For now.”

Inspector Valli spoke.

“Where would Ethan take them?”

Margaret hesitated.

Daniel recognized the calculation in her eyes.

She wanted something.

“What is your price?” he asked.

“Protection from Ethan.”

“You are in police custody.”

“Custody will not protect me if he releases what he knows.”

“What does he know?”

Margaret’s gaze shifted toward Valli.

“About Carlo’s death.”

Daniel went still.

Inspector Valli activated a recording device.

“Continue.”

Margaret folded her hands.

“Carlo discovered the foundation accounts and Christopher’s existence. He planned to announce both during a family council meeting.”

“What happened before the meeting?” Daniel asked.

“He suffered a heart attack.”

“You said Ethan knows something else.”

Margaret closed her eyes briefly.

“I changed Carlo’s medication.”

Daniel did not move.

The room became silent.

“I did not poison him,” she said quickly. “I replaced one prescription with a weaker dosage. I intended to make him ill enough to delay the meeting.”

“You caused his death.”

“The doctor said his condition was unstable.”

“You caused his death.”

“I did not expect—”

Daniel stood so suddenly that the chair struck the wall.

Valli stepped between him and the table, though Daniel made no movement toward Margaret.

He looked at his mother as if she were a stranger.

Margaret’s composure finally broke.

“I was trying to save what belonged to us.”

“You killed the man who built it.”

“I made one decision under pressure.”

“You made thousands of decisions. You forged Claire’s letter. You confined her. You hid my daughters. You used my body to create a child. You stole money from a charity. You helped Ethan erase people.”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears, but Daniel felt no comfort in them.

“Tell me where they are,” he said.

Margaret whispered, “Villa Azzurra.”

“Where is that?”

“An island property in the northern lake district. Carlo purchased it through Thomas before Christopher was born.”

“Why would Ethan go there?”

“Because the original trust documents are stored beneath the chapel.”

Valli signaled to officers outside.

Daniel turned toward the door.

Margaret called his name.

He stopped but did not look back.

“If you find Claire,” she said, “ask her why she never told you Christopher existed.”

Daniel faced her.

“She was imprisoned.”

“Not during the first year.”

The statement struck him.

Margaret continued.

“Claire met Christopher before she disappeared. She knew he was your son. She chose not to tell you.”

Daniel opened the door.

“Whatever her reason was, you made sure she could never explain it.”

He left Margaret to face the charges waiting beyond the interview room.

Within an hour, police helicopters were traveling toward Villa Azzurra.

Daniel joined Inspector Valli on the first aircraft.

Below them, the lake appeared black beneath the night sky.

Paolo received a signal from the island.

A brief emergency transmission had been sent from an old radio.

The voice belonged to Claire.

Only six words were clear.

Ethan knows Daniel is not alone.
