Chapter 6 - The House Without a Handle

Ethan’s signal stopped near an old monastery in the mountains.

The property had belonged to a religious order until fifteen years earlier, when it was sold to a company registered in Luxembourg. Paolo traced the company through three layers of ownership.

The final beneficiary was the Saint Aurelia Children’s Foundation.

Margaret had signed the purchase.

Daniel contacted Inspector Lucia Valli, the national financial crimes officer Claire had once intended to meet. Valli had investigated the Moretti foundation briefly after Carlo’s death, but the case collapsed when the primary witness disappeared.

The primary witness had been Claire.

Valli agreed to meet Daniel near the monastery.

“You should understand something,” she told him. “Your family’s influence reaches beyond this valley. If we enter without proper authorization and find nothing, Ethan will claim harassment and move every remaining record.”

“Claire may be inside.”

“Then I need evidence that she is being held against her will.”

Elena handed Valli the key.

“It opens the private patient archive at Villa Serena. Claire’s original intake order should be there.”

Valli sent two officers to obtain it.

Daniel watched the monastery through binoculars from a forest road. Ethan’s car stood near a side entrance. Another vehicle arrived just after noon.

Margaret stepped out.

Daniel felt a deeper kind of betrayal than anger.

Some part of him had still hoped Ethan acted alone.

Margaret walked inside without hesitation.

Forty minutes later, Inspector Valli received a photograph from her officers.

Claire’s file had been found.

The intake authorization was signed by Margaret Moretti. No court order accompanied it. No independent doctor had approved the confinement. Payments had been made through the foundation.

Valli obtained an emergency warrant.

Daniel waited while officers approached the monastery from three directions.

The front doors opened before they reached them.

Margaret emerged alone.

She looked directly toward Daniel’s hidden position.

“Come inside,” she called. “You have already caused enough damage.”

Valli ordered her to step away from the entrance.

Margaret raised both hands.

“There is no threat here.”

“Where is Claire Bennett?” Valli asked.

“Recovering.”

“From what?”

“Paranoia, emotional instability, and an obsession with my son.”

Daniel stepped from the trees.

“My daughters say otherwise.”

“They are children repeating what they were taught.”

“They recognized Ethan.”

“Because Claire taught them to.”

Daniel stopped several feet from her.

“Did you know she was pregnant when you forced her to leave?”

Margaret’s expression became almost gentle.

“I knew before she did.”

Daniel felt sick.

“How?”

“She fainted during the foundation dinner. The family doctor confirmed it.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I gave her an opportunity to end the situation quietly.”

Valli turned sharply.

Margaret continued before Daniel could speak.

“She refused. She threatened to expose financial decisions she did not understand. Your father became sentimental and careless.”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“What happened to him?”

Margaret looked toward the monastery.

“Carlo’s heart failed.”

“After he recorded that you confronted him.”

“He was an old man under pressure.”

“You created the pressure.”

“I preserved what he built.”

“You stole what he built.”

For the first time, anger broke through Margaret’s control.

“I held this family together while he gave away money to anyone with a convincing tragedy. I corrected his mistakes. I protected your inheritance.”

“You delayed my control of the trust because the records would expose you.”

Margaret said nothing.

Inspector Valli ordered officers to escort her to a vehicle.

As they approached, a loud alarm sounded inside the monastery.

Smoke appeared from a window on the second floor.

Ethan ran from a rear exit.

Paolo and two officers pursued him.

Daniel moved toward the building.

Valli grabbed his arm.

“You cannot enter.”

“Claire may be inside.”

“Fire services are coming.”

“That may be too late.”

Daniel pulled free and entered through the front door.

Smoke filled the main corridor, but the fire appeared concentrated in an administrative room. Someone had set paper records alight inside metal cabinets. The stone structure had slowed the spread.

“Elena said Claire mentioned a door without a handle,” Daniel shouted.

An officer pointed toward a staircase.

The upper floor contained small bedrooms with locked doors. Most were empty.

At the end of the corridor, Daniel found a wall covered by a large wooden panel. There was no handle.

He struck it with his shoulder.

It did not move.

An officer found a concealed keypad behind a religious painting. Elena entered a code she had seen Ethan use at Villa Serena.

The panel opened.

Inside was a narrow room without windows.

A bed stood against one wall.

It was empty.

On the mattress lay a blue dress folded with careful precision.

The same blue dress Claire had worn in the torn photograph.

Daniel touched the fabric.

It was clean and recently placed.

Beside it was a photograph of Ivy and Skye as infants.

Someone had written a message across the back.

He cannot protect all three.

Daniel read it again.

All three.

Elena appeared behind him.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“I don’t know.”

From outside came the sound of engines and shouted orders.

Paolo entered the room, breathing heavily.

“Ethan escaped through an underground passage. We found another vehicle missing.”

“Was Claire with him?”

“We don’t know.”

Daniel held up the message.

“There may be another child.”

Paolo looked at the photograph.

Before he could respond, Inspector Valli called from the corridor.

“We found someone in the chapel.”

Daniel ran downstairs.

A woman sat behind the chapel altar wrapped in a gray blanket.

Her dark hair covered her face.

Daniel stopped at the entrance.

“Claire?”

The woman lifted her head.

May you like

She had Claire’s eyes.

But she was not Claire.
