Chapter 10 - The Father at the Island

Villa Azzurra stood on a narrow island surrounded by steep cliffs and dark water.
The estate consisted of a stone house, a small chapel, and a private dock hidden beneath an overhang. No lights were visible when the helicopters approached.
Inspector Valli ordered the pilots to land on the eastern field while marine officers surrounded the island.
Daniel stepped onto the grass before the aircraft had fully powered down.
The front door of the villa stood open.
Inside, the rooms were empty.
Food remained warm on the dining table. A child’s coat lay across a chair. Medical supplies were scattered near the fireplace.
They had left only minutes earlier.
Paolo found bloodless strips of torn fabric caught on a rear gate. Beyond it, a path descended toward the chapel.
Daniel ran.
The chapel door had been forced open.
Inside, candles burned along both walls. Claire stood near the altar with one hand gripping a wooden pew.
For several seconds, Daniel could not speak.
She was thinner than he remembered. Her face carried exhaustion and years that should not have been there. Her dark hair had been cut unevenly near her shoulders, and the familiar gold bracelet remained around her wrist.
But she was alive.
Claire looked at Daniel.
Her expression broke.
“You found them.”
Daniel crossed the distance between them.
He stopped just before touching her, uncertain whether she would welcome it.
Claire solved the question by stepping into his arms.
Daniel held her carefully.
Four years of anger, grief, and unanswered questions collapsed into one silent moment.
“I thought you left me,” he whispered.
“I tried to reach you.”
“I know.”
“The girls?”
“They are safe.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Thank God.”
Inspector Valli entered the chapel.
“Where are Ethan and Christopher?”
Claire pulled away.
“Thomas took Christopher through the tunnel beneath the altar. Ethan followed them.”
“Is Thomas helping Ethan?” Daniel asked.
“No. Thomas has protected Christopher since birth. He brought us here because he believed the trust documents could be exchanged for safe passage.”
“Why did Ethan bring you?”
“He needs my signature to claim Christopher is mentally unfit to control the trust when he becomes an adult. Ethan plans to appoint himself permanent administrator.”
Daniel looked toward the altar.
“How do we open the tunnel?”
Claire pointed to a carved stone bell on the wall.
Daniel pressed it.
A section of the floor moved aside, revealing narrow stairs.
Before he descended, Claire caught his arm.
“There is something you need to know about Christopher.”
“Margaret told me how he was created.”
“That is not everything.”
“Then tell me.”
Claire looked toward Valli.
“We do not have time. Ethan knows the police are here.”
A distant gunshot-like crack echoed below, though it sounded more like a heavy door slamming than a weapon.
Daniel entered the tunnel with Paolo and two officers.
The passage ended at a cavern beneath the cliffs.
A motorboat waited beside a stone dock.
Ethan stood near it with one hand on Christopher’s shoulder.
The boy had dark hair and Daniel’s gray eyes. He looked frightened but unharmed.
Thomas Bennett stood several feet away holding a metal case.
He was the elderly man from the airport image.
“Let the child go,” Inspector Valli called.
Ethan pulled Christopher closer.
“He belongs to the trust.”
“He is not property,” Daniel said.
Ethan laughed.
“That is easy for you to say. You inherited everything without earning the name.”
“You controlled the family companies for years.”
“And still Carlo chose a laboratory mistake over me.”
Christopher looked up.
“I’m not a mistake.”
The simple words silenced the cavern.
Daniel moved one step closer.
“No. You are not.”
Ethan’s grip tightened.
Daniel stopped.
Thomas placed the metal case on the dock.
“The original trust documents are here. Release Christopher, and you can take them.”
Ethan looked at the case.
“You expect me to believe you?”
“No,” Thomas said. “I expect your greed to make you check.”
Ethan pushed Christopher toward the boat and reached for the case.
Christopher stumbled away from him.
Daniel moved quickly, pulling the boy behind him.
Paolo stepped between Ethan and the boat.
Officers surrounded the dock.
Ethan froze.
Thomas opened the case.
It contained no trust documents.
Only copies of financial records and a small recording device.
Ethan’s voice had been captured throughout the confrontation.
“You planned this,” Ethan said.
Thomas nodded.
“Carlo taught me to prepare for men who believe fear is loyalty.”
Ethan looked toward the water, but marine police boats appeared beyond the cave entrance.
There was nowhere to run.
He was arrested before sunrise.
By noon, Margaret had been formally charged with financial fraud, unlawful confinement, evidence tampering, and involvement in Carlo’s death. Ethan faced additional charges connected to kidnapping, conspiracy, and destruction of records.
The Saint Aurelia Foundation accounts were frozen. Independent trustees were appointed to protect the charitable funds. Lauren agreed to testify and surrendered every document she had hidden from her husband.
Daniel returned to the Moretti mansion with Claire, Christopher, Ivy, and Skye.
The twins ran toward Claire before she reached the terrace.
Claire dropped to her knees and held them both.
Daniel watched Christopher stand several feet away, uncertain where he belonged.
Daniel approached him slowly.
“You can stay here as long as you want.”
Christopher looked at the mansion.
“Is it your house?”
“It belongs to all of us now.”
“Even me?”
Daniel nodded.
“Especially you.”
Christopher considered the answer.
Then he placed his small hand in Daniel’s.
For the first time since finding the twins, Daniel felt that something broken had begun to mend.
Not everything.
But enough.
That evening, the family ate together in Carlo’s former study. No formal staff attended them. No one sat according to age, wealth, or title. Ivy insisted on placing bread rolls beside every plate, and Skye warned everyone to check inside them first.
Claire smiled.
It was a small smile, but it was real.
After the children fell asleep, Daniel and Claire stood on the terrace overlooking the lake.
“Margaret said you knew about Christopher before you disappeared,” Daniel said.
Claire’s smile faded.
“I did.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Your father asked me to wait until he removed Margaret from the trust.”
“You could have trusted me.”
“I wanted to. But someone had been reading your messages and entering your apartment. Carlo believed the leak was close to you.”
“Ethan?”
Claire looked toward the open doorway.
“No.”
Daniel waited.
“Then who?”
Before Claire could answer, the mansion clock began ringing midnight.
One chime.
Two.
Three.
A light appeared near the abandoned boathouse across the lake.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
The building had been sealed by police.
A second light flashed.
Then a third.
Claire gripped the terrace railing.
“That is Thomas’s signal.”
“Thomas is inside with Inspector Valli.”
Claire shook her head.
“No. Thomas has a twin brother.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You never mentioned that.”
“I only learned about him at Villa Azzurra.”
The terrace door opened behind them.
Christopher stood there holding the cloth rabbit that belonged to Skye.
“There’s something inside,” he said.
Daniel took the rabbit.
A seam along its back had been cut and carefully repaired.
Claire’s face went pale.
“I didn’t put anything there.”
Daniel opened the seam.
Inside was a small brass key and a recent photograph.
The photograph showed Carlo Moretti standing beside the abandoned boathouse.
Daniel’s father had supposedly been dead for four years.
Yet the date printed in the corner was from six weeks earlier.
On the back, a message had been written in the same handwriting as the warning hidden inside the bread.
Daniel,
Margaret and Ethan were only the first gate.
Do not open the room beneath the boathouse unless all three children are with you.
Daniel looked across the lake.
The lights near the boathouse went dark.
His phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent a live video.
The screen showed the locked room beneath the boathouse.
A man sat in the shadows facing the camera.
His voice was weak but unmistakable.
May you like
“Daniel, bring my grandchildren home.”
The video ended before the man stepped into the light.
