Chapter 4 - The Father Who Never Knew

Daniel sat alone in his father’s former study with the ultrasound image in his hands.

The twins slept in the next room.

He had spent years believing Claire had rejected him. He had used anger to cover humiliation and work to cover grief. He had built hotels in three countries, expanded the Moretti shipping division, and appeared in photographs beside people whose names he barely remembered.

None of it mattered while he looked at the blurred outlines of two unborn children.

His children had existed while he was searching airports and bank accounts for a woman who had apparently been trying to reach him.

A handwritten note appeared beneath the medical date.

Thirteen weeks. Both strong.

Daniel calculated backward.

Claire had learned she was pregnant seven days before she vanished.

He pressed his fingers against his eyes.

Sofia entered quietly.

“Ivy woke up.”

Daniel lowered his hands.

“Is she all right?”

“She asked whether you were still here.”

Daniel stood immediately.

He found Ivy sitting on the bed while Skye slept beside her. The child held the cloth rabbit under one arm.

Daniel sat several feet away.

“I’m here.”

Ivy watched him.

“Are you our father?”

He had negotiated contracts worth hundreds of millions without hesitation. He had addressed rooms filled with investors, government officials, and reporters.

He could not answer a three-year-old.

“I think I am,” he finally said.

“Mommy said you didn’t know.”

“No. I didn’t know.”

“She said it wasn’t because you didn’t want us.”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“Your mommy was right.”

Ivy moved closer.

“Why didn’t she come?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“The bad man moved us at night.”

“Ethan?”

Ivy nodded.

Daniel kept his voice calm.

“Where did he move you from?”

“A white house.”

“Near the lake?”

She shook her head.

“There were no mountains. There was a bell, but it was a church bell.”

“Was your mother with you?”

“At first.”

“What happened?”

Ivy stared at the rabbit.

“She got sick.”

Daniel waited.

The child spoke again.

“A nurse came. Mommy gave us bread and said not to eat the hard ones. Then the nurse put us in a car.”

“The lady with red gloves?”

Ivy nodded.

“Did your mother leave with you?”

“No.”

“Did she say where she was going?”

“She said she would follow when the door opened.”

Daniel felt cold despite the fire.

“What door?”

Ivy pointed toward the ceiling.

“The door without a handle.”

Sofia gave Daniel a warning look. The child had already offered more than anyone should demand from her.

Daniel stopped questioning.

He covered Ivy with a blanket and remained beside the bed until she slept.

Then he returned to the digital recorder found behind the painting.

The device contained four files.

The first was a conversation between Carlo Moretti and Claire.

Carlo’s voice sounded weak but clear.

“The foundation accounts are being used to purchase private property through shell organizations. Margaret signed the approvals. Ethan created the transfers.”

Claire responded, “Daniel has to know.”

“No. Not until I can remove them from the trust.”

“They already suspect I copied the documents.”

“I will protect you.”

“You may not be able to.”

The recording ended.

The second file was made two days later.

Carlo sounded breathless.

“Claire, leave the estate tonight. Do not use your phone. Take the documents to Inspector Valli.”

Then Margaret’s voice entered the room.

“What documents?”

The file ended abruptly.

The third recording contained only thirty seconds of footsteps, a door closing, and an argument too distant to understand.

The fourth file was labeled D.

Daniel pressed play.

His father spoke alone.

“Daniel, if you hear this, I failed.”

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.

“Claire did not steal from us. She discovered that Margaret and Ethan had used the foundation to move family assets beyond your control. I intended to confront them after the board meeting. If I am unable to do so, search the Saint Aurelia properties. Claire knows which records matter.”

The recording crackled.

Then Carlo continued.

“There is one more truth about the trust. Margaret must never learn that Claire—”

The file stopped.

Daniel tried replaying it.

The same abrupt ending remained.

A knock sounded.

Paolo entered.

“We located the dark vehicle.”

“Where?”

“Near the south vineyard. It was abandoned.”

“Owner?”

“The registration belongs to a private medical company called Aurelia Recovery Services.”

Daniel stood.

Saint Aurelia Children’s Foundation.

Aurelia Recovery Services.

The connection was too obvious to be accidental.

“Find every property owned by that company.”

“Already started.”

Paolo placed a clear evidence bag on the desk.

“This was under the driver’s seat.”

Inside was a disposable phone.

The last outgoing message appeared on its cracked screen.

May you like

The message had been sent to Ethan.

The children are with Daniel. Claire is awake.
