Chapter 9 - WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE PARTY
The photographs from the baby shower never appeared on Madison’s social media pages.
Within days, her business partners separated themselves from the company. The bank froze the fraudulent application, and the family trust filed a civil claim to recover the legal and investigative costs.
Madison eventually admitted forging Eleanor’s signature.
Because the transfer had been stopped before the property was taken, the court approved a settlement involving probation, financial restitution, and mandatory community service.
The consequences were serious, but Eleanor did not ask the court for revenge.
She asked only for protection.
Kyle moved out of the house shortly after the shower.
The property belonged to the trust, and Eleanor gave him six weeks to find an apartment.
“You’re throwing me out?” he asked.
“I’m requiring you to stand on your own.”
“What about the baby?”
“The baby will always have a safe place with me. That does not mean you are entitled to one.”
Kyle nodded.
He did not argue.
He began attending counseling. He hired his own attorney and filed for legal separation from Madison. He also informed the court that he intended to share responsibility for his failure to examine the financial documents.
For the first time in years, Kyle stopped explaining himself and began changing himself.
Every Sunday, he visited Eleanor.
At first, she allowed him to stay only for coffee.
Later, they began repairing old furniture together in Thomas’s workshop.
One afternoon, Kyle found the blanket folded on a shelf.
“Are you still giving it to the baby?” he asked.
“That depends.”
“On Madison?”
“On whether the child will grow up in a home where love is respected.”
Kyle lowered his head.
“I’m going to make sure that happens.”
Eleanor studied him.

For once, he did not ask her to believe his words.
He simply returned to sanding Thomas’s old chair.
