Chapter 4 - THOMAS’S FINAL INSTRUCTION
David opened Thomas’s estate file in his office.
“There’s something I never told you,” he said.
Eleanor looked up sharply.
David removed a small handwritten note.
“Thomas gave this to me a month before he died. He instructed me not to show it to you unless someone attempted to interfere with the trust.”
Eleanor read the note.
David, I have placed the bank box key and a copy of the final trust amendment inside the baby blanket. Eleanor believes it is only a sentimental gift. Let her believe that until the family’s character is tested.
Eleanor lowered the paper.
“He knew?”
“He was concerned.”
“About Madison?”
“About anyone who might view your grief as weakness.”
David explained that Thomas had discovered Madison asking questions about the trust during his final illness. She had wanted to know when Kyle would inherit, whether Eleanor could be removed as trustee, and whether the lake house could be sold.
Thomas had changed the trust shortly afterward.
The original arrangement would have divided control between Eleanor and Kyle. The amendment made Eleanor the sole controlling trustee for the rest of her life.
Thomas also placed evidence of every family asset inside a secure bank box.
“Why hide the key in the blanket?” Eleanor asked.
David smiled sadly.
“Thomas said people reveal themselves around things they believe have no financial value.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
The blanket had been intended as a test, but Thomas could not have known how cruel that test would become.
“What happens now?” she asked.
“We allow the bank’s investigation to continue. Do not confront Madison yet.”
“What about Kyle?”
David hesitated.
“We need to know whether he participated knowingly.”
Eleanor’s heart ached at the possibility.
Kyle was her only child. She remembered the boy who once rescued worms from the sidewalk after rain. The boy who cried when he accidentally broke her favorite mug.
But the man he had become signed documents without calling his mother.
Even cowardice could cause enormous harm.
Eleanor agreed to remain silent until they had proof.
