Chapter 7 - THE LETTER FROM A DEAD MAN

After the investigators entered, no one at the shower knew where to look.

Some guests lowered their phones out of respect.

Others continued recording.

Madison pointed toward the officer.

“This is private property. You need to leave.”

The bank investigator presented a document.

“We have authorization to speak with Mrs. Whitmore regarding suspected financial fraud. The officer is here because evidence indicates a forged signature was submitted.”

Madison looked at Kyle.

“Tell them your mother approved everything.”

Kyle’s expression was empty.

“Did she?”

“I already told you she did.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Eleanor handed Thomas’s letter to Kyle.

He read silently.

My son,

If you are reading this, you have reached a moment when silence is no longer kindness.

You may believe avoiding conflict protects the people you love. It does not. Silence protects the person causing harm.

Your mother and I built this family with honesty, work, and respect. The property can be replaced. Character cannot.

If someone has insulted the blanket before discovering what it contains, remember that they have shown you how they value love when they believe no money is attached.

Do not choose wealth over your mother.

Do not choose comfort over the truth.

Become the man I raised.

Dad

Kyle read the final sentence twice.

His eyes filled with tears.

Madison reached for his arm.

“Kyle, we need to talk upstairs.”

He stepped away.

“No more private explanations.”

She looked around at the guests.

“You’re humiliating me.”

Kyle laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You threw my father’s last gift into the trash.”

“It was a blanket.”

“No,” Kyle said. “It was love. You thought it was worthless because you couldn’t display a price tag beside it.”

Madison’s face twisted.

“I did everything for our child.”

May you like

Eleanor answered quietly.

“A child does not need a stolen house.”
