Chapter 3 - THE PAPERS KYLE DID NOT READ
Two weeks before the baby shower, Madison placed a stack of documents in front of Kyle while he was eating breakfast.
“Sign these.”
Kyle glanced at the pages.
“What are they?”
“Financial planning documents.”
“For what?”
“The baby.”
Madison pushed a pen toward him.
Kyle had spent most of his adult life avoiding conflict. As a child, he had watched his parents discuss disagreements calmly. Thomas never raised his voice, and Eleanor never used silence as punishment.
Kyle mistook peace for the absence of confrontation.
Madison had learned that if she became angry enough, Kyle would surrender.
He signed the first page.
Madison turned to the next.
“We’re moving some assets around.”
“What assets?”
“The lake property.”
Kyle stopped.
“That belongs to Mom.”
“It belongs to the trust.”
“Mom controls the trust.”
Madison’s jaw tightened.
“Your father built that wealth for his family. You’re his only son.”
“And Mom is his wife.”
“She can’t manage everything forever.”
Kyle placed the pen down.
“Did she agree to this?”
Madison looked directly into his eyes.
“Yes.”
It was a lie delivered without hesitation.
Kyle signed.
He did not know Madison had already submitted a document carrying Eleanor’s forged signature. He did not know she planned to use the lake house as collateral for a private business venture.
Madison had invested heavily in a luxury maternity brand with two friends. The company was failing before it launched.
If the loan was approved, she could hide the losses.
If the company succeeded, she would replace the money before anyone noticed.
At least, that was what she told herself.
Three days later, Eleanor received a call from a bank employee asking her to confirm a property transfer.
“There must be a mistake,” Eleanor said.
The employee became cautious.
“Did you recently authorize your son and daughter-in-law to act on behalf of the family trust?”
“No.”
After the call, Eleanor sat alone at her kitchen table.
She wanted to telephone Kyle immediately.
Instead, she called David Mercer.
Thomas’s attorney asked her to bring every document she had received from the bank.

“This is not a misunderstanding.”
