Chapter 8 - Everyone Saw

The garage recording played across the enormous screen.
Richard’s accusation filled the ballroom.
“You stole from the pension fund.”
Several employees stared at Adrian with horror. Some had parents whose retirement accounts were managed by the company. Others had worked for Vale Industries for decades.
On the screen, Adrian’s recorded voice answered his father.
“It was temporary.”
“Forty million dollars is not temporary,” Richard said.
Evelyn appeared in the footage.
“Once Adrian becomes chief executive, he can replace it before anyone knows.”
A woman near the front table covered her mouth.
An older factory supervisor stood and shouted, “That was our money!”
Adrian ran toward the control booth, but the ballroom technicians stepped away from the equipment.
“Turn it off!”
The footage continued.
On the screen, Richard accused Adrian of threatening him. Adrian responded by warning that people of Richard’s age had accidents.
Now no one was silent.
Phones recorded every second. Investors called their lawyers. Board members moved away from Evelyn as though her panic were contagious.
The ballroom doors opened.
Maya Torres entered with federal officers.
“Adrian Vale and Evelyn Vale,” she announced, “do not leave this room.”
Adrian turned toward Claire.
“You did this.”
“No,” Claire said. “You did.”
Evelyn rushed forward, still gripping the trophy.
“You have destroyed this family!”
Claire stood beside the ruined dessert table.
“A family does not steal from thousands of people.”
Adrian tried to take Claire’s flash drive, but an officer stepped between them.
Maya presented the warrants.
Adrian’s confidence finally collapsed.
“You can’t arrest me based on a video.”
“The video is only the beginning,” Maya said. “We have the banking records, server logs, contracts, messages, and testimony from your father.”
The ballroom doors opened again.
Richard Vale walked inside.
The entire room went still.
He looked thinner than before, but he stood without assistance.
Adrian stared at him.
“You’re supposed to be sick.”
May you like
Richard faced his son.
“No. I was supposed to be silent.”
