Chapter 1 - The Night the Screen Came Alive

The gold trophy slipped from Evelyn Vale’s hands and crashed onto the dessert table.
Crystal dishes shattered. A tower of champagne-colored macarons collapsed across the black tablecloth. Claire Vale stumbled backward, one hand pressed against the small wound near her temple while the corporate ballroom fell silent.
Her husband, Adrian, did not move to help her.
He laughed.
“Always making a scene.”
The cruel amusement in his voice traveled through the ballroom more sharply than the breaking glass had. Around them, hundreds of executives, employees, investors, and partners watched beneath the warm glow of crystal chandeliers.
Evelyn lifted the trophy again and pointed it at Claire.
“She tried to shame this family.”
Claire steadied herself against the damaged table. Her silver gown was stained with chocolate and red berry sauce, but her fingers remained tightly closed around the small black flash drive hidden in her palm.
Adrian stepped closer.
His smile looked pleasant to the guests, but his eyes carried a warning Claire had seen many times behind closed doors.
“Give me the drive,” he whispered.
Claire looked beyond him toward the giant presentation screen.
For years, Adrian and Evelyn had controlled every room they entered. They controlled the company, the employees, the public story, and even the way Claire was allowed to speak.
But not tonight.
The Vale Industries logo flickered.
Then it disappeared.
The ballroom lights dimmed as grainy security footage filled the giant screen. An underground garage appeared. Richard Vale, the company’s silver-haired founder, stood between two parked cars, facing Adrian and Evelyn.
The real Adrian stopped smiling.
On the recording, Richard’s voice echoed through the ballroom.
“You stole from the pension fund.”
A wave of shocked whispers moved across the room.
Evelyn slowly lowered the trophy.
Adrian spun toward the control booth. Several guests had already raised their phones.
“Turn it off!” he shouted.
No one obeyed.
Claire pushed herself upright while the recording continued behind her.
On the screen, Richard stepped closer to the hidden camera. His expression was exhausted, but his voice remained steady.
“Claire,” he said, “they know you found the evidence.”
Adrian turned toward his wife.
For the first time since Claire had married him, she saw fear on his face.
The ballroom doors opened.
Two federal investigators entered with uniformed officers behind them.

Claire finally opened her hand and revealed the flash drive.
“It’s too late,” she said. “Everyone has seen the truth.”
