Chapter 7 - The Trophy

The gala ballroom glittered with black-and-gold decorations.
Executives toasted Adrian’s future. Employees applauded when Evelyn entered carrying the large gold trophy she would later receive onstage.
Claire stood beside the dessert display, watching the presentation screen.
Maya sent a message to the hidden phone inside Claire’s purse.
We are in position.
Adrian approached with two glasses of champagne.
“To new beginnings,” he said.
Claire did not accept the glass.
“Where is your father?”
Adrian’s smile tightened.
“Not tonight.”
“I know you put him in that facility.”
For a moment, the music and conversations around them seemed to disappear.
Adrian set both glasses down.
“You should lower your voice.”
“I know about the offshore companies.”
Evelyn appeared beside him.
“What is she saying?”
Claire opened her hand just enough for them to see the black flash drive.
Evelyn’s face changed.
Adrian reached for it, but Claire stepped back.
A server passed between them carrying a tray. Several guests turned to watch.
Evelyn whispered, “You ungrateful little thief.”
“You stole from your employees,” Claire replied.
“They would have nothing without us.”
“They earned that money.”
Evelyn grabbed the trophy from the display stand.
Adrian tried to keep smiling as he addressed the nearby guests.
“My wife is overwhelmed.”
Claire moved toward the control booth.
Evelyn blocked her path and raised the trophy.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
The trophy struck the dessert table as Claire stepped away. The force shattered glass dishes and sent the display collapsing.
A broken decoration brushed Claire’s temple. She lost her balance and fell against the table.
Adrian laughed nervously, hoping to turn the moment into entertainment.
“Always making a scene.”
Claire looked around the ballroom.

The guests were watching now.
