THE RESCUE DOOR / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Signature Dinner

The gala began beneath a ceiling of white orchids and suspended lights.

Politicians, investors and reporters filled the tower’s upper floors. A string quartet played near the main staircase while giant screens displayed images from Hart Meridian’s history.

Nathan Vale did not appear in any of them.

Evelyn wore a dark blue gown and carried a small purse containing the memory card, a copy of the trust and a transmitter connected to Mira’s secure server.

Rosa remained close in a simple black dress.

Mira watched from the lower ballroom.

Adrian controlled the security room.

Daniel had barely spoken since arriving.

“You can still leave,” he told Evelyn near the elevators.

“So can you.”

“My mother believes the board will remove us if the trust activates.”

“The shares belong to my daughter.”

“You do not understand what will happen if control changes.”

“Then explain it.”

He glanced toward Celeste.

“I cannot explain here.”

“Because she is watching?”

“Because everyone is watching.”

Celeste approached with a smile prepared for the cameras.

“There is my beautiful daughter-in-law.”

She kissed the air beside Evelyn’s cheek.

“The private dinner is ready.”

“I am not hungry.”

“You do not need to eat. You only need to sign.”

Several photographers turned toward them.

Evelyn smiled.

“Then let us discuss it privately.”

They entered the glass-roof garden after the public speech.

The guests remained inside the ballroom, separated from them by a set of decorative doors. From a distance, the gathering might have appeared to be an intimate family celebration.

A small table stood near the rescue door.

The weakened panel lay between the table and the main entrance.

Celeste placed the agreement beside a silver pen.

“Sign, and the evening ends peacefully.”

Evelyn did not sit.

“Why did you steal money through Northbridge?”

Celeste’s smile vanished.

Daniel looked toward the roof camera.

Its red light was off.

“Do not say that name,” he warned.

“My father said it first.”

Evelyn took the cassette recorder from her purse and pressed play.

Nathan’s voice filled the garden.

“My name is Nathan Vale. This recording concerns Hart Meridian Project Aegis and the financial network called Northbridge.”

Celeste knocked the recorder from Evelyn’s hand.

It slid across the stone path.

“You foolish girl.”

“Did you kill him?”

“No.”

“Did William?”

Celeste looked toward Daniel.

“Take her phone.”

Daniel did not move.

“Daniel,” Celeste repeated.

Evelyn turned to him.

“This is the moment you decide who you are.”

His expression tightened.

“My entire life has been decided for me.”

“Then make one decision now.”

Celeste grabbed the agreement.

“Your father believed evidence could protect him. It did not.”

“What happened to him?”

“He found people above William. People who did not permit questions.”

“Who?”

“You will never learn their names.”

Rosa moved closer to Evelyn.

Celeste noticed.

“You should have left this family thirty years ago, Rosa.”

“I stayed because someone had to remember.”

“You were always a servant who confused access with importance.”

“And you were always a frightened woman who confused cruelty with power.”

Celeste slapped the table with the papers.

“Sign.”

“No.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mother, stop.”

She turned on him.

“You lost control of your wife. You lost the archive. You allowed the trust to become active in less than a month.”

“The baby is not due for three weeks.”

Celeste looked at Evelyn’s belly.

“Babies arrive early.”

The words were soft, but the threat was unmistakable.

Rosa reached for Evelyn.

At that moment, the ballroom doors locked behind them.

The lights above the roof went dark.

The table’s metal base moved.

It struck the edge of the weakened panel.

A crack appeared.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“What did you activate?”

Celeste stepped onto the stone pathway.

“The final negotiation.”

Evelyn moved backward.

The panel cracked beneath her heel.

Daniel ran toward the rescue door and opened it.

“Come here!”

Rosa pushed Evelyn toward him.

Before they reached the doorway, Celeste entered the corridor and grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“Make her sign first.”

“The panel is breaking.”

“It was designed to frighten her.”

“You do not know that.”

Celeste pulled him inside.

Daniel reached toward Evelyn.

“Give me the agreement.”

“Unlock the door.”

“Sign the final page.”

“Daniel!”

He looked at Celeste.

May you like

She nodded.

Daniel turned the lock.
