Chapter 4 - A Marriage Built on Signatures

Evelyn and Rosa remained hidden until Daniel and Celeste left.

Neither woman spoke until they were safely inside the elevator.

Rosa gripped the handrail.

“We must go to the police.”

“With what? An old photograph, a trust document and one sentence that could mean anything?”

“It means the roof is dangerous.”

“I know.”

Evelyn placed both hands on her stomach. The baby had begun moving rapidly, reacting to her fear.

“We need evidence they cannot dismiss.”

Rosa looked at her.

“You are thinking like your father.”

“I hope that is a compliment.”

“It is also a warning.”

They left the tower through the service entrance and drove directly to the office of Mira Chen, an attorney who had represented Evelyn’s mother many years earlier.

Mira read the agreement Daniel had given Evelyn, then examined copies of the documents from Room 1706.

“This marital agreement is not a formality,” she said. “It transfers your future authority over every asset placed in your daughter’s name.”

“Can Daniel take the trust without my signature?”

“No.”

“What if we divorce before the baby is born?”

“The trust language names you as trustee whether or not you remain married.”

“Then why is he pressuring me?”

Mira turned to another page.

“This section grants him emergency guardianship authority if you are declared medically incapable of managing the trust.”

Evelyn went still.

“What qualifies as medically incapable?”

“The language is broad. A serious accident, prolonged hospitalization or psychiatric evaluation could be used.”

Rosa whispered a prayer in Spanish.

Mira continued.

“If you die before the child is born, the trust remains inactive. The shares return to the original corporate holding group.”

“Celeste.”

“Most likely.”

Evelyn thought of Celeste’s words.

Then the roof will convince her.

Mira copied the files and placed them in a secure cabinet.

“You should stay somewhere Daniel cannot reach you.”

“He will know I am afraid.”

“You should be afraid.”

“I am. But I do not want him to know how much I understand.”

Mira studied her for a long moment.

“What are you planning?”

“The gala gives them a deadline. That means they will move before Friday or during the event.”

“You are not attending.”

“If I refuse, they may choose a place without cameras.”

“You cannot use yourself as bait. You are pregnant.”

“I am not trying to trap them. I am trying to learn what part of the building they already changed.”

Rosa placed the brass key on Mira’s desk.

“Room 1706 may contain more.”

Mira shook her head.

“You have enough to seek a court order.”

“By the time a judge reads it, someone may remove everything.”

Evelyn’s phone rang.

Daniel.

She answered.

“Where are you?”

“At the doctor.”

“You did not tell me about an appointment.”

“It was unexpected.”

“Is the baby all right?”

For one hopeful second, he sounded like the husband she remembered.

“She is fine.”

“Good. Come to the tower.”

“Why?”

“I arranged a private viewing of the gala space. My mother thinks seeing the roof will remind you why this company must remain under experienced control.”

Evelyn looked at Mira.

“Today?”

“Now.”

“I am tired.”

Daniel’s tone changed.

“This does not need to become difficult.”

“It became difficult when you placed our daughter inside a business contract.”

Silence.

Then he spoke more softly.

“Evelyn, there are people on the board who will destroy everything my family built. Sign the agreement, and this ends.”

“What exactly ends?”

“You will understand on Friday.”

The call disconnected.

Mira reached for Evelyn’s phone.

“Give me permission to copy it.”

“Why?”

“Because I believe someone installed monitoring software.”

A scan confirmed it twenty minutes later.

Daniel could see Evelyn’s location, messages and call history.

Mira removed the program, then created a duplicate signal that would make the phone appear to remain at her office.

Evelyn opened her bag to put the device away.

Inside was an object she had not placed there.

A small fragment of laminated glass.

A message had been written across it in black ink.

THE FIRST PANEL HAS ALREADY BEEN REPLACED.
