Chapter 10 - The Door Turned Twice

The first crack spread beneath Evelyn’s knees.
She reached toward the rescue door.
“Daniel, unlock the door!”
He stood behind the reinforced window with his hand on the mechanism.
“You should have signed the papers.”
Rosa lay flat on the stronger support section and wrapped her scarf around a rail.
“Hold on to me,” she said. “Do not look down.”
Evelyn grabbed the fabric.
Behind the door, Celeste spoke rapidly.
“The panel will not collapse. Let her understand the consequences.”
“You told me it was tested,” Daniel said.
“It was.”
“By whom?”
Celeste did not answer.
A new fracture raced toward Evelyn.
Daniel reached for the lock.
His mother stopped him.
“If you open that door before she signs, you lose everything.”
“My daughter is out there.”
“Your daughter is an unborn shareholder who will remove you from your own company.”
Daniel stared at Evelyn through the window.
For a second, she saw the man she had married.
Then he looked away.
He turned the lock a second time and walked from the door.
The emergency alarm activated.
The security voice came through the intercom.
“Daniel Hart, step away from the exit. The roof camera recorded who damaged the glass and who ordered it.”
Celeste looked at the camera.
“That system was disabled.”
“The visible system was,” Adrian’s voice replied. “The protected system was not.”
Heavy footsteps approached.
Daniel tried his fingerprint on the door.
Access denied.
Adrian entered the executive corridor with security officers, firefighters and Detective Maya Torres from the city’s financial crimes division.
Daniel stared at him.
“You arranged this.”
“No,” Adrian replied. “Your wife’s father arranged it thirty years ago.”
Adrian entered a code.
The rescue door opened.
Rosa tightened her hold on Evelyn.
“Do not trust him,” she whispered. “He was here the night your father died.”
Adrian stepped onto the stone support path and clipped a rescue line to the rail.
Two firefighters followed.
“No one steps on the damaged panel,” he ordered.
A reinforced platform was extended beneath Evelyn’s arms. She was lifted slowly from the fractured glass and secured to the pathway.
Rosa refused assistance until Evelyn was safe.
The moment Evelyn reached solid ground, she placed both hands over her stomach.
“My baby.”
A paramedic listened for the heartbeat.
A rapid, steady rhythm sounded from the monitor.
“She is responding well,” the paramedic said. “We are taking you to the hospital.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Only then did she allow herself to cry.
Detective Torres entered the corridor.
“Daniel Hart, step away from the door.”
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“I did not know the panel was that weak.”
“You locked me outside.”
“My mother said it would hold.”
“You locked your child outside.”
Celeste interrupted.
“My son was under extreme emotional pressure.”
Torres turned toward her.
“And you are Celeste Hart?”
“I am chairwoman of this company.”
“You are also visible on the protected recording giving instructions to the maintenance contractor.”
Celeste looked toward Adrian.
“You will regret choosing her.”
“I began regretting my choices thirty years ago,” he replied.
Daniel was handcuffed first.
Celeste remained motionless as an officer approached her.
“You cannot arrest me based on a camera system created by a dead man.”
A mechanical sound came from beneath the glass roof.
The Aegis server activated.
Every screen in the ballroom changed.
Nathan Vale appeared on them.
The video had been recorded decades earlier.
“If this message is playing,” Nathan said, “an executive has interfered with the rescue system and placed another person in danger.”
The guests turned toward the screens.
Nathan continued.
“The following files contain evidence of financial theft, illegal surveillance and deliberate safety violations committed during the construction of Hart Meridian Tower.”
Celeste’s face changed.
She pulled away from the officer and ran toward the control panel.
Adrian blocked her.
“You cannot stop it.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What is in those files?”
Celeste said nothing.
The screens displayed a list of Northbridge accounts.
One name appeared at the top.
WILLIAM HART.
Then another appeared beneath it.
CELESTE HART.
A third name began loading.
Before it became visible, every screen went black.
The building lost power.
In the darkness, someone whispered near Evelyn’s stretcher.
“Nathan’s final file was never meant to expose Celeste.”
May you like
Evelyn turned toward the voice.
The speaker was gone.
