Chapter 14 - The House Beneath the Tower

Room 1706 contained another map.
Evelyn found it beneath the old Aegis server after Nathan’s trust recognized Clara as the beneficiary.
A compartment opened automatically.
Inside was a blueprint showing Hart Meridian’s foundation and a structure not included in any modern building plan.
It was marked VALE SHELTER.
The entrance lay beneath the tower’s eastern elevator bank.
Evelyn, Rosa, Mira, Adrian and Detective Torres entered the underground level together.
No one went unarmed or alone.
The elevator ended at a concrete maintenance corridor. At its far wall stood an old steel door without a handle.
The brass key fit a narrow opening.
Rosa inserted it.
Nothing happened.
Evelyn placed her palm against a metal panel.
A scanner moved across her hand.
“Evelyn Vale recognized,” a voice announced.
A second scanner activated at a lower height.
Evelyn held Clara near it.
“Vale heir recognized.”
The door opened.
Beyond it was not a shelter.
It was a house.
A narrow underground residence had been built beneath the tower. It contained a bedroom, kitchen, medical cabinet, workshop and communication room.
Dust covered most surfaces.
But not all of them.
A cup sat beside the sink.
The coffee inside it was still warm.
Adrian raised his flashlight.
“Someone was here recently.”
Torres ordered her officers to search every room.
No person was found.
In the workshop, Evelyn discovered updated copies of Nathan’s roof design. Notes had been added in blue ink over the years.
One note referenced the replacement panel installed before the gala.
Someone had known about it months earlier.
Another note listed Lila Grant’s name.
“She was working with whoever lived here,” Mira said.
Rosa opened a wardrobe.
Men’s clothing hung inside.
The sizes matched Nathan’s old measurements.
Evelyn touched the sleeve of a dark coat.
It was identical to the coat Adrian had worn during the rescue.
She turned toward him.
“Did you know about this place?”
“No.”
“Your access appears throughout the old records.”
“William made me monitor several sealed levels. I never knew what was inside them.”
Torres emerged from the communication room carrying a folder.
“It is addressed to Evelyn.”
The handwriting looked like Nathan’s.
Evelyn opened it.
My daughter,
If you are reading this, Aegis has recognized your child and the Hart family has repeated the mistake I hoped they would never make.
The rescue door was not created to save people from a broken roof.
It was created to reveal the person willing to lock it.
Do not assume the most visible enemy is the most dangerous one.
Celeste protects Northbridge because she fears its founder.
William served it because he wanted its money.
Adrian watched it because guilt made him useful.
Lila entered it because she believed she could destroy it from inside.
And I created part of it before I understood what it would become.
Evelyn stopped reading.
“My father created Northbridge?”
“Keep going,” Mira said.
The final paragraph had been written in different ink.
Do not open the second rescue door until Clara is born.
If I am alive, opening it will bring me home.
If I am dead, opening it will tell you who made certain I never returned.
A metal door stood at the back of the communication room.
Above it were the words RESCUE DOOR B.
Clara began crying.
At the same moment, the warm coffee cup fell from the kitchen counter.
It shattered on the floor.
A hidden speaker activated.
A man’s voice filled the underground house.
“Evelyn, take your daughter and leave.”
She recognized the voice.
It was older and rougher, but it was the voice from Nathan’s recording.
May you like
“Dad?”
The lights went out.
