Chapter 15 - the camera that recorded tomorrow)

Three weeks later, the Mercer family moved into a rented house thirty miles outside the city.
No basement.
No pantry locks.
No hidden corridors.
Daniel checked.
Twice.
Claire began physical therapy.
Federal investigators took control of the underground Mercer site.
Evelyn agreed to testify.
Marcus resigned as Daniel's attorney and then returned two days later because Daniel said he trusted him more after learning exactly how little he trusted him.
Owen returned to school.
Not the same school.
Mr. Kelly remained missing.
Lily's bruise disappeared.
Her fear did not.
Some mornings she still checked behind doors before entering rooms.
Daniel noticed every time.
He didn't tell her to stop.
Instead he checked with her.
The family developed new rules.
Nobody dismissed knocking.
Nobody used the phrase just a dream.
Nobody locked interior doors without explaining why.
And if a child said something felt wrong, an adult listened before offering an explanation.
For twenty-one days, nothing supernatural happened.
Daniel's eyes remained brown.
No voices.
No shadows.
No Claire appearing on cameras where she wasn't standing.
Life slowly began becoming ordinary.
Then Owen received a package.
No return address.
Inside was his old navy school blazer.
The one police had taken as evidence.
The gold crest camera was still attached.
Owen ran downstairs.
“Dad.”
Daniel looked up from the kitchen.
“What happened?”
Owen placed the blazer on the island.
Daniel's expression changed.
“Where did you get that?”
“Mail.”
Claire entered.
She saw the crest.
“That camera was destroyed.”
Daniel nodded.
“I crushed it.”
Owen removed the device.
The lens was perfect.
No cracks.
No damage.
Claire whispered, “Don't turn it on.”
Owen already had.
A green light blinked.
His laptop automatically recognized the memory card.
There was one file.
Daniel leaned closer.
The filename contained a date.
October 18.
Claire frowned.
“That's next week.”
Owen looked at the system clock.
October 11.
Daniel's skin went cold.
“Don't play it.”
Owen looked at him.
“You want to ignore it?”
Daniel recognized his own lesson being returned to him.
“No.”
He pulled out a chair.
“Play it.”
The video began.
The angle came from Owen's blazer.
But Owen was not wearing it.
Whoever carried the camera was walking through a building.
White corridor.
Hospital lights.
A digital clock on the wall showed 3:17 a.m.
Claire whispered, “Where is that?”
Nobody answered.
The camera passed a sign.
SAINT MATTHEW RESEARCH CENTER.
Daniel froze.
“I know that place.”
Claire looked at him.
“How?”
“My father funded it.”
The recording continued.
A security door opened.
The camera descended several flights of stairs.
At the bottom was another corridor.
This one older.
Concrete.
Red lights.
Owen stopped breathing.
“It looks like beneath the mansion.”
A person appeared at the end.
Vanessa.
Daniel stood.
“That video says next week.”
Vanessa walked toward the camera.
She looked different.
Her hair was shorter.
A cut marked her forehead.
She stared directly into the lens.
“Owen, if you're watching this, they already sent the blazer back.”
Lily moved closer to Claire.
Vanessa continued.
“I have less than four minutes.”
Daniel whispered.
“How could she record this?”
Claire shook her head.
On screen, Vanessa looked behind her.
Then back at the camera.
“Your father was right not to trust me.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“But Claire was wrong about one thing.”
Claire stared.
“The Circle didn't keep her underground for four years.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“They kept her underground for thirty-seven minutes.”
Nobody moved.
Claire whispered, “What?”
Vanessa continued.
“The rest of those four years happened somewhere else.”
Claire backed away from the laptop.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What does she mean?”
“I don't know.”
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Claire, if you're there, ask yourself why you remember sleeping.”
Claire froze.
Daniel turned.
“What?”
Vanessa continued.
“Ask yourself why you never got hungry.”
Claire's face drained of color.
“Stop the video.”
Daniel didn't.
“Ask yourself why the scar above your eyebrow wasn't there when they took you.”
Claire touched the scar.
Her hand shook.
Vanessa leaned closer to the camera.
“You weren't imprisoned for four years.”
She whispered.
“You were returned four years later.”
The video glitched.
For three seconds only static appeared.
Then a different room.
A laboratory.
Glass chambers lined both walls.
Inside them stood people.
Men.
Women.
Children.
All motionless.
Owen paused the video.
Lily gasped.
One chamber contained a boy who looked exactly like Owen.
Not similar.
Exactly.
Same age.
Same face.
Same dark hair.
Same school uniform.
Owen touched his own cheek.
“What is that?”
Daniel stepped closer.
The chamber beside the boy contained Lily.
Mustard cardigan.
Cream blouse.
Eyes closed.
Lily began crying.
Claire covered her mouth.
The next chamber contained Daniel.
Dark navy suit.
Red light visible beneath his eyelids.
And the final chamber contained Claire.
Daniel looked at the real Claire beside him.
She stared at the screen in horror.
The video resumed.
Vanessa stood before the chambers.
“The Architect doesn't want to release the Hollow.”
She looked into the camera.
“He wants to replace everyone capable of stopping it.”
A door opened somewhere behind her.
Vanessa turned.
Fear crossed her face.
She spoke quickly.
“Owen, your camera wasn't sent back to warn you.”
Footsteps approached.
Vanessa backed away.
“It was sent so he could find the version of you that escaped.”
The image shook.
Someone grabbed Vanessa.
She screamed.
The camera fell.
From floor level, it recorded a pair of polished black shoes walking closer.
The person stopped directly in front of the lens.
A man's voice spoke.
Calm.
American.
Familiar.
Daniel's face changed.
He knew that voice.
Owen looked at him.
“Dad?”
Daniel didn't answer.
The man in the recording crouched.
His face entered frame.
Owen gasped.
Lily screamed.
Claire gripped the table.
Daniel stared at the screen.
The man looked exactly like Daniel.
Except his eyes were already red.
He smiled into the camera.
“If you're watching this, brother, you finally found the wrong Claire.”
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Claire slowly stepped away from Daniel.
“Brother?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't have a brother.”
Evelyn's voice came from the doorway.
“Yes.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel's mother stood there.
Her face had gone completely white.
Daniel stared at her.
“What did you say?”
Evelyn's eyes remained fixed on the blank laptop screen.
“You had a brother.”
Daniel felt the room tilt.
“What was his name?”
Evelyn did not answer.
“Mom.”
She began crying.
Daniel moved toward her.
“What was his name?”
Evelyn whispered it.
“Gabriel.”
Daniel had never heard the name.
Claire asked the question he couldn't.
“What happened to him?”
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“The night your father died, I was told Gabriel died too.”
“By who?”
“The Ash Circle.”
Daniel's eyes began burning.
Evelyn continued.
“But there were never two bodies.”
The kitchen lights flickered.
Owen looked toward the back door.
Someone stood outside.
A tall man.
Dark suit.
Same height as Daniel.
Same face.
The stranger smiled through the glass.
Lily whispered, “Daddy?”
Daniel moved in front of his family.
“No.”
The stranger raised one hand.
In his palm rested Claire's missing silver locket.
The original one.
Claire touched the empty place at her throat.
Daniel stared.
The man outside pointed toward the woods behind the house.
Then he mouthed three words.
She is waiting.
Daniel reached for the door.
Claire grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.”
He stopped.
Outside, the stranger was gone.
Only the locket remained.
Lying on the porch.
Owen's laptop made a sound.
A new video file had appeared.
No one had touched the computer.
The filename contained tomorrow's date.
Lily stared at it.
“Are we going to watch it?”
Daniel looked at Claire.
Then Owen.
Then Lily.
Then at the place where his impossible brother had been standing.
For generations, the Mercers survived because they kept secrets.
That ended now.
Daniel pulled the laptop toward him.
“Yes.”
Owen opened the new recording.
The screen remained black for several seconds.
Then Claire's voice came through the speakers.
Not the Claire standing beside them.
A second Claire.
Crying.
Breathing heavily.
Somewhere very far away.
“Daniel, if you can hear me…”
The Claire beside Daniel stopped breathing.
The recorded woman whispered one final sentence.
May you like
“Please don't trust the woman who came home.”
The screen went black.
