Chapter 14 - the door they sealed)

The Mercer mansion survived.

Barely.

By midnight, police had Vanessa in custody.

The underground complex was real.

That mattered.

Whatever supernatural evidence disappeared when Elias vanished, the concrete rooms remained.

Documents remained.

Medical equipment remained.

Claire's fingerprints were everywhere.

So were Vanessa's.

The Ash Circle could no longer pretend nothing had happened.

Detective Ross personally contacted federal authorities.

Marcus gave them the names Claire remembered.

Three Circle members fled the country before sunrise.

Seven were arrested.

Others vanished.

Mr. Kelly disappeared before police reached his home.

Owen pretended that did not bother him.

It did.

Daniel moved the family to a hotel.

Lily refused to sleep alone.

Nobody complained.

Claire sat beside her until morning.

At 3:00 a.m., Daniel found Owen awake in the adjoining suite.

The boy stared through the window.

“Can't sleep?”

“No.”

Daniel sat beside him.

For several minutes neither spoke.

Finally Owen asked, “Are you mad I recorded everything?”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

“You were before.”

“I was wrong.”

Owen nodded.

Daniel continued.

“I should have noticed.”

“Vanessa was good at hiding it.”

“That's not an excuse.”

Owen looked at him.

Daniel didn't want to tell his children that adults always knew what to do.

That would be another lie.

“I can't promise I'll never miss something again.”

Owen waited.

“But I can promise you won't have to prove you're hurting before I listen.”

Owen looked down.

“Okay.”

Daniel put his arm around him.

After a moment Owen leaned against his father.

Claire watched from the doorway.

Daniel saw her.

Neither spoke.

Later, when the children finally slept, Daniel and Claire stood alone on the hotel balcony.

The city glowed below them.

Daniel looked at her.

“I don't know how to do this.”

“Do what?”

“Have you back.”

Claire smiled sadly.

“I don't know how to be back.”

He looked away.

For four years he had imagined what he would say if he could speak to her again.

None of it felt useful now.

“I married her.”

Claire's face tightened.

“I know.”

“She hurt our kids.”

“I know.”

“I didn't see it.”

Claire remained silent.

Daniel's voice broke.

“I brought her into our home.”

Claire touched his hand.

“Daniel.”

“I failed them.”

“You did.”

He looked at her.

Claire did not soften the words.

“You failed to see what was happening.”

Daniel swallowed.

“And then you listened.”

She continued.

“And you believed them.”

“And if Owen hadn't recorded it?”

Claire had no comforting answer.

So she gave him the true one.

“Then maybe it would have taken longer.”

Daniel nodded.

Claire squeezed his hand.

“Being a good father isn't proving you never fail.”

“What is it?”

“Making sure your children can come back to you after you do.”

Daniel looked through the glass door.

Owen and Lily slept together on the large bed.

For the first time in years, both looked peaceful.

“What about us?”

Claire laughed softly.

“That is significantly more complicated.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Fair.”

“I'm not the woman who disappeared four years ago.”

“I know.”

“You aren't the man I left.”

“I know.”

“We don't pretend the last four years didn't happen.”

“Okay.”

Claire looked at him.

“But maybe we find out who we are now.”

Daniel nodded.

“That sounds good.”

She rested her head against his shoulder.

For several minutes, they watched the city.

There was no supernatural roar.

No red light.

No locked pantry.

Just traffic.

Wind.

And two people who had survived something impossible.

The next morning, Lily ate pancakes.

Owen complained about hotel orange juice.

Claire laughed.

Daniel realized he had not heard that sound in four years.

It hurt.

And healed.

At noon, Detective Ross called.

Vanessa wanted to speak to Daniel.

He almost refused.

Then Vanessa told Ross she had information about the thing behind the red door.

Daniel went.

Vanessa sat behind reinforced glass.

No green dress.

No makeup.

No control.

“You won,” she said.

“This isn't a game.”

“It always was to them.”

“Who?”

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“You still think the Ash Circle was running this.”

“Claire gave us forty-three names.”

“Forty-three employees.”

“Employees of whom?”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“I never met him.”

“Who?”

“My orders came through intermediaries.”

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“Whose orders?”

Vanessa looked toward the camera in the interrogation room.

“Turn that off.”

“No.”

“Then I'm not saying the name.”

Daniel stood.

Vanessa spoke quickly.

“He knows Claire is alive.”

Daniel stopped.

“He knows Owen recorded everything.”

Daniel slowly turned.

“He knows about Lily's dreams.”

“Who?”

Vanessa's eyes filled with genuine fear.

“And he knows you saw what was behind Elias.”

Daniel returned to the glass.

“Tell me his name.”

Vanessa whispered.

“I don't know his real one.”

“What do you call him?”

“The Architect.”

Daniel stared.

“What does he want?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“To make the red door irrelevant.”

“How?”

May you like

She smiled without humor.

“By opening all the others.”
