Chapter 12 - the house chose a side)

By sunset, the mansion became a crime scene.

That lasted twenty-three minutes.

Then the power failed.

Every police radio died simultaneously.

Phones lost signal.

The electronic gates closed.

Daniel stood in the foyer with Detective Hannah Ross when every chandelier flickered red.

Ross reached for her weapon.

“What is that?”

Daniel already knew.

“Everyone away from the walls.”

“What?”

“Now.”

A hand pushed outward from beneath the wallpaper.

Ross stumbled backward.

The cream-colored wall stretched.

A face appeared underneath it.

No features.

Just an impression.

Then another.

The house was filling with shapes.

Claire ran from the stairs.

“It's coming through.”

Daniel shouted for the children.

Owen appeared holding Lily's hand.

Evelyn followed.

Police officers gathered in the foyer.

One officer stared toward the dining room.

A woman stood beside the table.

Vanessa.

Green dress.

Perfect hair.

No sign she had been missing.

Daniel moved forward.

Ross raised her pistol.

“Ma'am, show me your hands.”

Vanessa smiled.

“You invited strangers into our home, Daniel.”

“Our home?”

She ignored Ross.

“You think Claire changes anything?”

Claire stepped into view.

Vanessa's smile tightened.

“You look terrible.”

Claire laughed.

“You look exactly the same.”

Vanessa's eyes flashed with hatred.

Daniel stood between them.

“Where were you?”

“Preparing.”

“For what?”

Vanessa looked at the walls.

“For the house to choose.”

A massive crack raced across the ceiling.

Lily screamed.

Daniel looked upward.

Vanessa continued.

“You still think this is about a monster beneath the floor.”

“What is it about?”

“Inheritance.”

Evelyn whispered, “No.”

Vanessa smiled at her.

“You never told him.”

Daniel turned.

“Told me what?”

Evelyn looked afraid.

Vanessa answered.

“The Hollow Father isn't trapped by Mercer blood.”

Claire stepped closer.

“We know.”

“No.”

Vanessa's smile widened.

“You know the first lie.”

“What is the second?”

“The Hollow Father is Mercer blood.”

Silence.

Daniel stared.

Vanessa pointed toward him.

“Elias Mercer didn't survive something beneath that first house.”

She tilted her head.

“He became it.”

Daniel felt heat behind his eyes.

Evelyn whispered.

“Don't listen.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Ask her.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Is Elias the Hollow Father?”

Evelyn's silence answered.

Owen backed away.

Daniel stared at his hands.

Every Mercer son had inherited something.

Not protection.

Not a guardian.

A fragment.

Vanessa walked toward him.

Ross ordered her to stop.

Vanessa ignored her.

“Every generation carries a piece. When enough pieces return to the door, Elias can become whole.”

Daniel understood.

“You need Owen too.”

Vanessa looked at the boy.

“Yes.”

Daniel moved instantly.

He seized Vanessa by the throat and slammed her against a column.

Police shouted.

Claire grabbed Lily.

Owen stared at his father.

Daniel's eyes glowed.

Vanessa did not struggle.

She smiled.

“There you are.”

Daniel released her as though burned.

Vanessa laughed.

“You still don't understand. Every time you use it, you become more of him.”

Daniel's red eyes dimmed.

Vanessa stepped away from the column.

“You cannot fight the Hollow without feeding it.”

Claire moved beside Daniel.

“Then we don't fight it your way.”

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Claire looked at Owen.

“The camera.”

“What?”

“The footage.”

Owen understood.

The Circle had built everything around secrecy.

Around fear hidden inside families.

Claire pointed toward the officers.

“Show everyone.”

Owen opened his laptop.

Vanessa rushed forward.

Ross blocked her.

Owen played the recordings.

Vanessa threatening Lily.

Vanessa entering the pantry.

Vanessa admitting knowledge of Claire.

The breakfast assault.

The unlocked doors.

Evelyn emerging.

Ross stared at the screen.

Other officers gathered.

Vanessa screamed.

“Turn it off!”

The house shook.

Owen increased the volume.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Fear grows in secrecy.”

Daniel understood.

“So does abuse.”

Vanessa's face changed.

The walls began cracking.

Not outward.

Inward.

The faceless shapes vanished.

The red lights dimmed.

Evelyn whispered.

“It's weakening.”

Vanessa screamed toward the ceiling.

“No!”

For generations, the Circle had treated the Mercer curse as supernatural machinery.

They had forgotten something simple.

The Hollow fed on hidden fear.

Owen had made the hidden visible.

And the house hated it.

The pantry doors exploded open.

A blast of darkness crossed the dining room.

Vanessa smiled again.

“You want truth?”

She turned toward the darkness.

“Then meet your ancestor.”

A man stepped out.

Tall.

Thin.

Dressed in an eighteenth-century black coat.

His eyes glowed crimson.

May you like

Daniel stared at the face from the portrait hanging in the Virginia estate.

Elias Mercer had come home.
