Chapter 8 - What the Camera Saw

Derek moved first.
He expected Nora to retreat.
She did not.
When he reached toward her, she blocked his arm and stepped aside. His own momentum carried him forward.
He tried again, angrier.
Nora redirected him away from her and the hard furniture. He stumbled against the mattress and sat down heavily on the edge of the bed.
The belt fell across his knee.
His shirt pulled loose where she had caught his sleeve.
Nora backed away immediately.
She kept both gloved hands raised but did not approach him.
Evelyn rushed from the doorway.
“What happened here?”
Derek looked at Nora in disbelief.
“You hit me!”
“No,” Nora said. “I stopped you.”
That distinction mattered.
The video showed it clearly.
Nora had used only enough force to create distance. She had not continued once he was no longer moving toward her.
Derek looked up and noticed the smoke detector.
He stared for half a second too long.
Nora raised her phone.
“Say it again. Both of you.”
Evelyn panicked.
She believed Nora was threatening to call someone, not realizing that the call had already been made.
“Get her signature before she realizes why you married her!”
The confession ended the performance.
Derek’s face turned white.
The bedroom door opened moments later.
Officers entered with Detective Shaw and Rachel.
The arrest happened exactly as Nora had planned and nothing like she had imagined.
There was no satisfaction at first.
Only exhaustion.
She watched officers escort the man she had married through the hallway where wedding flowers still stood in silver vases.
Evelyn shouted at the police until Detective Shaw mentioned the camera.
Then she became silent.
Rachel remained beside Nora.
“You’re safe.”
Nora looked at her wedding gown.
“I married him yesterday.”
“You married a character he created.”
“That doesn’t make me feel less foolish.”
Rachel took her hand.
“Trusting someone is not foolish. Building a lie to exploit that trust is.”
Downstairs, Derek demanded an attorney.
Evelyn blamed her son.
Derek blamed his mother.
Within an hour, the partnership they had maintained for years began collapsing.
The police recovered the leather folder, the belt, Derek’s phone, and several encrypted drives from Evelyn’s car.
The drives contained financial records, drafts of false medical reports, surveillance photographs, and a detailed timeline titled Project Bennett.
Nora saw the title two days later.
Her relationship had been a project.
Every date had notes.
Every gift had a purpose.
Even the proposal at the boxing gym had been selected because a consultant believed it would create an emotional connection to her father.

Nora closed the file.
For the first time since the arrest, she cried.
