Chapter 5 - The Wedding Countdown

During the final days before the wedding, Derek became more attentive than ever.
He brought breakfast to Nora’s office. He sent affectionate messages every hour. He apologized repeatedly for hiding the debt and promised never to discuss business during their honeymoon.
Evelyn behaved as though the crisis had strengthened the family.
Yet both of them began asking strange questions.
Would Nora’s company recognize Derek as her legal representative in an emergency?
Did the prenuptial agreement prevent spouses from sharing temporary voting authority?
Could Nora sign documents electronically while traveling?
Each question had an innocent explanation.
Together, they formed a pattern.
Rachel traced several shell companies connected to Hale Capital. One had recently paid a private medical consultant who specialized in capacity evaluations, the process used to determine whether someone was mentally capable of managing financial decisions.
Another payment had gone to a security firm that investigated Nora’s daily schedule.
“They weren’t protecting you,” Rachel said. “They were studying you.”
Nora felt physically ill.
The detective advised her to cancel the wedding.
Nora considered it.
But the evidence still did not prove what Derek intended to do. If she ended the relationship immediately, Hale Capital might destroy records and disappear behind lawyers.
Nora wanted the complete truth.
She also wanted every employee and investor affected by the Hale family’s actions to have evidence.
Together, Nora, Rachel, and Detective Shaw created a plan.
Nora would proceed with the ceremony while maintaining full control of her finances.
Rachel placed emergency restrictions on the trust and notified the board that no transfer of voting authority would be valid without her personal confirmation.
A technician installed a discreet camera in the honeymoon bedroom after confirming it was legal to record in the property Nora owned.
The live feed was encrypted and connected to Rachel.
Detective Shaw arranged for officers to remain nearby during the couple’s return.
Marcus insisted Nora carry a small emergency transmitter.
He also gave her the old red gloves she had worn during her final amateur fight.
“You probably won’t need these,” he said.
Nora held them against her chest.
“I hope I don’t.”
On the morning of the wedding, she stood before a mirror while assistants adjusted the train of her gown.
She expected to feel terrified.
Instead, she felt strangely calm.
Derek entered the chapel smiling.
To everyone watching, he looked like a devoted groom.
Nora looked into his eyes and searched for the man she thought she knew.
For one second, she almost believed he was still there.
Then the officiant asked Derek to repeat his vows.

He promised to honor, protect, and cherish her.
Nora heard every word as evidence.
