Chapter 2 - Evelyn’s Perfect Welcome

Derek introduced Nora to his mother after two months.
Evelyn Hale lived in a limestone mansion filled with portraits of people who looked as though smiling would have cost them money.
She greeted Nora warmly.
“My son has never spoken about anyone the way he speaks about you.”
Dinner was flawless.
Evelyn asked about Nora’s childhood, her education, and her plans for Bennett Medical Systems. She praised Nora’s independence and complained about women who married wealthy men without building anything themselves.
“You understand responsibility,” Evelyn said. “That is rare.”
Nora wanted to like her.
For the first several weeks, she did.
Evelyn sent flowers to Nora’s office and invited her to private lunches. She shared stories about Derek as a child and spoke openly about the family company’s financial difficulties.
According to Evelyn, Hale Capital was facing temporary problems because of poor decisions made by former executives. She insisted Derek was trying to save the firm without outside help.
Nora admired his determination.
She did not know Hale Capital was more than temporarily troubled.
The company was drowning in debt.
Several projects had failed, creditors were demanding payment, and a confidential audit had uncovered transactions that could expose Evelyn and Derek to civil claims.
They needed an immediate source of money.
Nora’s inheritance was not simply attractive.
It was their final opportunity.
Derek proposed four months after meeting her.
He chose the old boxing gym where Nora had trained with her father. Candles lined the ring. A violinist played from the corner, and photographs from Nora’s childhood had been arranged along the ropes.
Derek knelt in the center of the canvas.
“You taught me that love isn’t about finding someone who protects you from every fight,” he said. “It is about finding someone who stands beside you.”
Nora cried before she said yes.
She never asked how he had gained access to photographs stored in her father’s private office.
Evelyn immediately offered to organize the wedding.
She wanted it held within eight weeks.
“The estate will be beautiful in summer,” she said. “Why wait when you already know?”
Rachel Kim, Nora’s attorney and oldest friend, was less enthusiastic.
“Eight weeks is fast.”
Nora smiled.
“You sound like my lawyer.”
“I am your lawyer.”
“You’re also supposed to be happy for me.”
Rachel studied Derek across the restaurant.
“I am happy when you’re happy. Those are not always the same thing.”
Nora dismissed the concern.
She believed Rachel was being protective because she had seen people attempt to use Nora before.
Then Derek made a suggestion that seemed to prove his intentions were honorable.
“We should sign a prenuptial agreement,” he said.
Nora was surprised.
Derek insisted he wanted no claim to Bennett Medical Systems or her inheritance.
Rachel drafted a strict agreement.
Derek signed it without complaint.
Nora’s remaining doubts faded.

She did not realize Derek had no intention of challenging the prenuptial agreement.
He planned to make her voluntarily sign away control after the wedding.
