Chapter 3 - The First Crack
The first warning appeared three weeks before the ceremony.
Nora returned unexpectedly to Derek’s apartment and heard him arguing with his mother in the study.
“You promised she would be ready by now,” Evelyn said.
“She trusts me,” Derek replied. “That is what matters.”
“And the board?”
“Once the documents are signed, the board won’t have a choice.”
Nora stood in the hallway, holding a bottle of wine.
The conversation stopped when she entered.
Evelyn smiled too quickly.
“We were discussing the merger proposal for Hale Capital.”
Derek walked over and kissed Nora’s forehead.
“My mother thinks every business problem should have been solved yesterday.”
Nora accepted the explanation, but something about the exchange stayed with her.
Later that night, she asked Derek what documents they had been discussing.
“Restructuring papers,” he said. “Nothing that affects you.”
He changed the subject.
For the first time since meeting him, Nora watched the change happen.
It was smooth, almost invisible.
He asked about wedding flowers. He touched her hand. He made a joke.
But he never answered her question.
Two days later, Rachel called Nora to her office.
“I need to show you something.”
She had received an anonymous email containing a copy of a loan application submitted by Hale Capital.
The application listed Bennett Medical Systems as a potential strategic partner.
Nora stared at the page.
“I never approved this.”
“I know.”
“Did Derek submit it?”
“His name is on the supporting documents.”
Nora felt a cold pressure in her chest.
When she confronted Derek, he seemed genuinely shocked.
He claimed an assistant had used an old presentation without permission. He called the bank in front of Nora and demanded that the application be withdrawn.
Then he fired the assistant.
The explanation was convincing.
Too convincing, Rachel thought.
“People who are innocent usually need time to understand what happened,” she told Nora. “Derek had an answer before you finished asking the question.”
Nora did not want suspicion to destroy the best relationship she had ever experienced.
Still, she agreed to let Rachel quietly investigate Hale Capital.
The results arrived four days before the wedding.
Hale Capital owed more than sixty million dollars.
Derek had personally guaranteed part of the debt.
Several creditors had delayed legal action because they believed a major investment was coming immediately after his marriage.
Nora read the report twice.
Then she sat alone in her office until midnight.
She wanted to cancel the wedding.
She also wanted Derek to walk through the door and explain everything in a way that made her feel foolish for doubting him.
