Chapter 9 - The Trial

Adrian’s trial began eleven months after the crash.
The courtroom was crowded with reporters, former employees, investors, and people who had once considered Adrian Vale untouchable.
His attorneys argued that Victor Hale was responsible for everything.
Victor testified in exchange for a reduced sentence.
He described the financial scheme, the deleted footage, and Adrian’s plan to send Lena through Blackwood Pass.
Then prosecutors played the original hospital recording.
“When the brakes fail, the trust transfers.”
Adrian stared straight ahead.
The most powerful testimony came from Lena.
She walked to the witness stand without assistance. Thin scars remained near her wrists, and her fingers did not move as easily as before, but she placed her hand firmly on the Bible.
Adrian watched her with the same expression he had used throughout their marriage whenever she challenged him.
It no longer affected her.
“Mrs. Vale,” the prosecutor asked, “why did you begin recording your husband?”
“Because part of me already knew the truth,” Lena replied. “I was simply afraid to admit it.”
“Why did you drive the car after hearing him discuss the brakes?”
“I thought there might be another explanation. I had spent twelve years finding explanations for things that should never have been excused.”
The courtroom became silent.
Adrian’s attorney approached for cross-examination.
“Mrs. Vale, you now control the company, the trust, and your husband’s former assets. You benefited from his downfall, didn’t you?”
Lena looked at Adrian.
“I benefited from surviving.”
The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
Adrian was found guilty on every major charge.
He received a lengthy prison sentence. His personal assets were seized to repay investors, employees, and charitable organizations harmed by his fraud.
As officers led him away, Adrian turned toward Lena.
“You would have been nothing without me.”
Lena did not answer.

Camille took her hand.
Together, they walked out of the courtroom while Adrian’s voice disappeared behind the closing doors.
