Chapter 1 - The Road Through Blackwood Pass

Six hours earlier, Lena Vale had been driving through Blackwood Pass beneath a cold silver sky.
Rain struck the windshield as the narrow mountain road curved between dark pine trees. Lena kept both hands on the steering wheel, trying to ignore the uneasy feeling that had followed her since leaving the Vale estate.
Adrian had insisted she drive to their lake property alone.
“It will clear your head,” he had told her that morning. “We both need time to think.”
They had argued the night before after Lena discovered unusual transfers from the Vale Family Trust. More than eight million dollars had been moved into an investment company she had never heard of.
When she asked Adrian about it, he smiled.
“You’ve never understood business.”
But Lena understood numbers.
Before marrying Adrian, she had worked as a forensic accountant. She had given up her career when Adrian’s company expanded and he convinced her that managing their home and charitable foundation was more important.
For years, she had trusted him.
That trust ended when she found documents showing that Adrian had used her electronic signature to approve loans, property sales, and payments to a company called Northstar Strategic Consulting.
The company had no office.
It had no employees.
Its registered owner was Adrian’s former college roommate, Victor Hale.
As Lena approached a sharp turn, she pressed the brake pedal.
It sank beneath her foot.
Nothing happened.
Her breath caught.
She pressed again.
The car continued accelerating downhill.
“No,” she whispered.
She pulled the emergency brake, but the vehicle barely slowed. The steering wheel shook violently as she fought to keep the car away from the cliff’s edge.
Her phone sat in the center console with its recording application still running.
Lena had started recording before leaving the estate because Adrian had followed her into the garage and spoken to someone through his wireless headset.
He thought she could not hear him.
“When the brakes fail, the trust transfers,” he had said. “Make sure she takes the mountain road.”
Lena had frozen behind the car door.
She wanted to confront him, but fear stopped her. Instead, she activated the recorder, slipped the phone into the console, and drove away, hoping she had misunderstood.
Now she knew she had not.
A delivery truck appeared around the next curve.
Lena twisted the steering wheel to avoid it.
Her car struck the roadside barrier, spun across the wet pavement, and crashed into a shallow ravine.
The world became sound, light, and silence.
Minutes later, a truck driver climbed down the embankment and called emergency services.

He found Lena conscious but trapped.
“My phone,” she whispered as rescuers reached her. “Please save my phone.”
