Chapter 7 - The Board Meeting

While investigators built their case, Adrian arrived at Vale Dynamics expecting to lead an emergency board meeting.
He entered the glass conference room with his usual confidence.
Twelve directors waited around the long table.
At the far end sat Evelyn Shaw, the independent trustee appointed by Jonathan Mercer.
Adrian stopped.
“You have no authority here.”
Evelyn opened a folder.
“Under the emergency provisions of the Mercer Family Trust, I have assumed temporary control of Lena’s voting shares.”
“My wife is alive.”
“Yes. Despite your efforts.”
Several board members looked down.
Adrian placed both hands on the table.
“This company belongs to me.”
“No,” Evelyn replied. “You manage it. Lena’s family financed it.”
She presented records showing that Adrian had transferred company funds into Northstar, inflated contracts, and used shareholder money to purchase private property overseas.
The board voted unanimously to remove Adrian as chief executive pending a criminal investigation.
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You think Lena can run this company from a hospital bed?”
The conference room door opened.
Camille entered carrying a tablet.
Lena appeared on the screen through a secure video call.
Her bandages were visible. Her arms remained inside casts, but her voice was steady.
“I don’t need to run it alone,” Lena said. “That was the lie you taught me to believe.”
Adrian moved closer to the screen.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed for you.”
“For me?” Lena asked. “You stole from my family, isolated me from my sister, and tried to kill me.”
“You cannot prove that.”
Behind Adrian, Detective Ruiz entered with two officers.
“We can,” he said.
Adrian turned.
Ruiz presented the arrest warrant.
Adrian’s confidence finally cracked.
He knocked a chair aside and attempted to reach the second exit, but the building’s security officers blocked him.
Ruiz placed him under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction of justice.
Employees watched through the glass walls as Adrian was led across the executive floor.

For years, they had lowered their voices whenever he passed.
That morning, no one looked away.
