Lena remained in the hospital for twelve more days.

After the swelling decreased, doctors replaced the heavy casts with lighter supports. She began physical therapy almost immediately.

The first exercise seemed simple.

Move one finger.

Lena stared at her right hand.

Nothing happened.

Again, the therapist said gently.

Lena concentrated until her entire body trembled.

Her index finger moved less than an inch.

Camille burst into tears.

Lena laughed for the first time since the crash.

Progress came slowly.

Some days, pain and exhaustion made her feel as though Adrian had succeeded after all. He had not killed her, but he had taken her independence, her music, and the life she knew.

Money had been moved through shell companies, false construction contracts, and charitable donations that never reached the people they were supposed to help.

Lena helped investigators recover more than twenty million dollars.

Some of the money was returned to investors.

The rest funded a new foundation supporting victims of financial abuse and coercive control.

Lena named it the Jonathan Mercer Initiative.

One afternoon, Dr. Hart entered the therapy room and found Lena attempting to press a piano key with her right index finger.

The note sounded weak and uneven.

But it sounded.

“You may not play the way you did before,” he said.

Lena pressed the key again.
