Chapter 6 - The Hotel Without a Conference

Michael had been staying twelve miles away.
Claire found the hotel receipt in Carla’s car after Carla voluntarily allowed Detective Ruiz to search it.
The room was registered under Victor Hale’s company.
Michael had checked in nine days earlier.
There had been no Chicago conference.
There had been no business negotiation.
Every video call had been carefully staged against the same blank hotel wall.
Claire returned to Bellweather with Dustin after midnight.
Owen went with Carla to a temporary apartment arranged by social services. Carla had not been arrested, but Ruiz warned her not to leave the city.
Ruth remained in custody pending further questioning.
Dustin stood in the dining room doorway and stared at the broken plate.
“We can clean it tomorrow,” Claire said.
He looked at the empty chair where Ruth had been sitting.
“Is she coming back?”
“No.”
“What about Michael?”
Claire wanted to promise that Michael would never return.
But the law was more complicated. He lived in the house, and they were married. She had already asked Naomi to begin separation proceedings and seek a protective order.
“He won’t be allowed near you,” she said.
Dustin nodded.
Claire warmed soup, toasted bread, and cut apples into slices.
They ate together at the kitchen counter.
Dustin finished everything.
Afterward, Claire packed away the remaining food and left the pantry unlocked.
At two in the morning, a car entered the driveway.
Claire checked the security camera.
Michael stepped out carrying a suitcase.
He looked tired, but not surprised to see two police vehicles parked nearby.
Ruiz met him on the porch.
Michael demanded to enter.
Claire remained behind the locked door.
“This is my home,” he shouted.
“No,” Claire answered through the intercom. “It is mine.”
“I live there.”
“You told your mother to frighten my son.”
“That recording was taken out of context.”
“What context makes starving a child acceptable?”
“I never told anyone to starve him.”
“You said they should do whatever was necessary.”
“I meant persuade you.”
“Why were you hiding at Hale’s hotel?”
Michael looked toward Ruiz.
“I need to speak to my wife privately.”
Ruiz shook his head.
Michael stared at the camera.
“Claire, Victor Hale is dangerous. If you refuse to sign, this will get worse.”
“Is that a threat?”
“It is a warning.”
“You used my child as leverage.”
“I was trying to protect all of you.”
“By stealing my home?”
“You don’t understand what your father did.”
Claire’s hand tightened around the intercom.
“What did he do?”
Michael glanced toward the road.
“Not here.”
“Then tell Detective Ruiz.”
“I can’t.”
“You won’t.”
“Claire, open the door.”
“No.”
His expression changed.
The frightened husband disappeared.
In his place stood someone Claire barely recognized.
“You have no idea who really owns that house,” he said.
Ruiz stepped forward.
Michael lifted his hands.
“I’m leaving.”
Before he returned to his car, he looked directly into the camera.
“Ask Naomi why your father chose her.”
The car disappeared down the driveway.
Claire called Naomi immediately.
The attorney answered on the fourth ring.
“Michael said I should ask why Dad chose you.”
Silence.
“Naomi?”
“I was hoping he did not know.”
“Know what?”
“Your father did not choose me because I was the best property lawyer.”
Claire waited.
Naomi’s next words made her sit down.
“He chose me because my father was the attorney who transferred Bellweather House from the Merritts to Henry.”
“Was the sale illegal?”
“No.”
May you like
“Then what are you hiding?”
“The sale was legal. The money used to purchase it may not have been.”
