Chapter 3 - The Sounds Behind the Door

Claire sat on the floor beside the boys.

“Why were you recording them?”

Dustin held the phone tightly.

“They talk when they think we’re asleep.”

Owen leaned closer to his cousin.

“My mom told Grandma they had to make you sign before Uncle Michael came back.”

Claire’s breathing slowed.

“What exactly did she say?”

Owen shook his head.

“I don’t remember all of it.”

Dustin unlocked the phone.

“I recorded some.”

The file contained nearly forty minutes of silence, footsteps, distant water pipes, and the low hum of the refrigerator.

Then Carla’s voice became audible.

“She won’t sign if you keep pushing.”

Ruth answered.

“She will when she realizes that boy is the reason her life is difficult.”

“Michael said not to leave marks.”

“I know how to frighten a child without touching him.”

Claire stopped the recording.

Dustin lowered his head.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire wrapped her arms around him.

“You have nothing to be sorry for.”

“I thought you wouldn’t believe me.”

The words hurt more than anything Ruth had said.

Claire pulled back and held her son’s face gently.

“I will always believe you when you tell me someone is hurting or frightening you.”

Owen began crying.

“My mom said they’re only trying to get back what belongs to our family.”

“What does she mean?” Claire asked.

He wiped his eyes.

“She says your dad stole the house from Grandma.”

Claire had never heard that accusation before.

Henry had purchased Bellweather House thirty-one years earlier. Claire had seen photographs of him repairing the abandoned rooms. She had also seen the framed deed in his study.

Until that moment, she had never wondered who owned it before him.

Claire copied the recording to her computer and sent another copy to Naomi.

Then she moved both boys into her bedroom for the night and locked the door.

At midnight, someone tried the handle.

Claire sat up.

The handle turned again.

“Who is there?”

Silence.

She reached for her phone.

A shadow moved beneath the door.

Then footsteps retreated down the hallway.

In the morning, the brass key to Henry’s study lay on the floor outside Claire’s bedroom.

Ruth and Carla denied leaving it there.

Claire installed new locks and changed the security codes while the women watched from the living room.

“This is insulting,” Ruth said.

“You entered my father’s study without permission.”

“You cannot prove that.”

“I saw Carla give you the key.”

Carla looked toward the window.

Claire held out a box.

“You may place your belongings inside it. You and your mother will leave this afternoon.”

Ruth smiled.

“Michael will not allow that.”

“Michael does not decide who stays in my house.”

“You still believe that?”

Ruth walked closer.

For a moment, her anger disappeared. What replaced it was colder.

“My son has sacrificed everything for you.”

“What has he sacrificed?”

“His name. His future. His inheritance.”

“Bellweather was never his inheritance.”

“It should have been.”

Claire studied her.

“Did your family own this house?”

Ruth’s mouth tightened.

“Ask your dead father.”

Claire did not respond.

Ruth walked away.

Naomi arrived an hour later with new information.

“Northbridge is controlled by something called the Merritt Renewal Trust.”

“Merritt is Michael’s family name.”

“Yes.”

“Who is the beneficiary?”

“That section is sealed.”

“Can it be unsealed?”

“Not without a court order or cooperation from the trustee.”

“Who is the trustee?”

“A man named Victor Hale.”

Claire had never heard the name.

Naomi continued.

“He is not a lawyer or financial adviser. He operates a private lending company.”

“Michael borrowed money from him.”

“That is my suspicion.”

Claire looked at the recording waveform on her computer.

“They are using Dustin to force me to transfer the house.”

“We need more evidence.”

“I already have evidence.”

“You have evidence of intimidation. We need proof of the fraud and Michael’s involvement.”

Claire wanted to order Ruth and Carla out immediately.

Naomi advised patience.

“If they believe you are still considering the transfer, they may reveal more.”

Claire hated the idea of allowing them to stay another night.

But she also knew that removing them without exposing the entire plan could leave Michael free to continue it later.

She agreed to one more day.

That afternoon, Claire pretended to reconsider the papers.

She told Ruth she might sign after speaking with Michael.

Ruth’s mood changed immediately.

She cooked Owen’s favorite dinner and hummed while setting the table.

Dustin was given a bowl of plain soup.

Claire exchanged it for her own meal.

Ruth watched without speaking.

Later, after the house became quiet, Claire placed a recording device inside Henry’s study.

At 2:14 in the morning, the door opened.

Claire watched through the new camera on her phone.

Carla entered first.

Ruth followed.

Then a third person stepped into the room.

He wore a gray coat.

Claire could not see his face.

The man walked directly to Henry’s desk, opened a hidden compartment Claire had never known existed, and removed a black leather ledger.

Before leaving, he turned toward the camera.

May you like

He smiled.

Then the screen went dark.
