Chapter 13 - The Name Beneath the Trust
Naomi spent two months tracing Gabriel Merritt.
She found no birth certificate under that name.
No school records.
No tax history.
No driver’s license.
It was as though the baby in the photograph had vanished immediately after Henry changed his identity.
Then Naomi found a death record for Elena Merritt.
She died eleven years earlier at Saint Matthew’s Hospital.
The date was one day before Dustin’s birth.
Claire read the report in Henry’s study.
Cause of death was listed as complications following an emergency procedure.
“What kind of procedure?” Claire asked.
“The detailed medical file is sealed.”
“Why?”
“Court order.”
“Requested by whom?”
Naomi placed another page on the desk.
“Henry Bennett.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Her father had hidden too much.
Michael’s crimes were real. Ruth’s cruelty was real. Carla’s cooperation did not erase what she had done.
Yet behind their scheme existed another story, one that began before Dustin was born.
Naomi found a visitor log from Saint Matthew’s.
On the night Elena died, Henry visited her room.
So did Daniel Reeves, Claire’s first husband.
Claire stared at Daniel’s signature.
“Why was he there?”
“I don’t know.”
“He told me he was working that night.”
“He was at the hospital for nearly three hours.”
“Dustin was born the next afternoon.”
Naomi pointed to another name on the log.
Thomas Wells.
Her father.
All three men had been at the hospital during Elena’s final hours.
Two were now dead.
The third could barely remember his own daughter.
Claire returned to the memory-care facility.
Thomas sat in the garden beneath a blanket.
This time, he recognized the photograph.
“Elena was afraid,” he said.
“Of Edward?”
“Of Gabriel.”
“The baby?”
Thomas shook his head.
“The father.”
Claire felt her pulse quicken.
“The baby and the father had the same name?”
“One name was inherited.”
“Who was Gabriel’s father?”
Thomas looked toward Naomi.
“Henry promised to protect the child.”
“Which child?”
“The one born after Elena died.”
“Dustin?”
Thomas’s eyes filled with tears.
“We changed the paper, not the blood.”
Claire leaned forward.
“What does that mean?”
But Thomas began repeating Henry’s name.
The staff ended the visit when he became distressed.
On the way back to Bellweather, Claire received a call from Detective Ruiz.
“We recovered the black ledger.”
“From Victor?”
“No. It was delivered anonymously to the police station.”
“Is it Henry’s?”
“We believe so.”
“Who delivered it?”
“The package had no return address.”
“Have you opened it?”
“Yes.”
Claire waited.
“Most of the pages are missing,” Ruiz said. “The remaining entries cover eleven years ago.”
“What do they show?”
“Payments to Saint Matthew’s Hospital, Thomas Wells, Daniel Reeves, and a private genetics laboratory.”
Claire gripped the phone.
“A genetics laboratory?”
“There is one result page.”
“Whose result?”
“The names are coded.”
“What does it say?”
Ruiz hesitated.
“It says the tested child was not biologically related to the man listed as the father.”
Daniel was listed as Dustin’s father.
Claire could not speak.
Ruiz continued.
“There is something written beside the result in Henry’s handwriting.”

The house protects him until Gabriel returns.
