Chapter 11 - The Signature Trap

Claire left the interview without giving Michael the satisfaction of seeing her shaken.

Outside, Naomi argued that Michael was manipulating her.

“He wants you distracted by a family mystery while the fraud case is building around him.”

“Then why does the code match?”

“That may be how Victor frightened Michael into cooperating.”

“Or it may be real.”

“We will investigate it. But first we stop the transfer.”

Naomi proposed a controlled meeting.

Claire would tell Victor that she was willing to sign a revised agreement if Michael’s debts were canceled and Ruth’s charges were reduced. The signature would not be valid because the authorities would stop the transaction before completion.

The purpose was to force Victor to identify the trust’s beneficiary.

Victor agreed to meet at a private conference room inside First County Bank.

He arrived with two attorneys and a locked briefcase.

Michael was brought under supervision after offering limited cooperation in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.

Carla also attended.

Ruth refused.

Claire sat at the center of the table with Naomi beside her.

Victor opened the briefcase and removed the transfer documents.

“The property will enter the Merritt Renewal Trust,” he said. “All existing claims against Michael will be resolved.”

“And Dustin?” Claire asked.

Victor’s face remained unreadable.

“What about him?”

“No person connected to this trust will approach him.”

“I cannot agree to such broad language.”

“Then I do not sign.”

Michael shifted in his chair.

“Claire, sign it.”

She looked at him.

“For months, you told me the house would protect our family. Tell me who receives it.”

“I don’t know.”

Carla laughed bitterly.

“You told me it was Owen.”

“I told you what Mother wanted to hear.”

Carla stood.

“You used us.”

“Sit down.”

“You promised my son a home.”

“I promised to solve a problem.”

“You let Mother believe she was reclaiming Bellweather.”

Michael struck the table with his palm.

“Because I needed both of you to pressure Claire.”

The room went silent.

Victor’s attorneys exchanged glances.

Michael realized what he had admitted.

Claire continued calmly.

“Did you tell them to frighten Dustin?”

Michael looked toward the camera in the corner.

“No.”

Carla spoke before he could say more.

“Yes, he did.”

“Carla,” Michael warned.

“You said Claire would sign faster if she believed Dustin was unwanted.”

“That is not what I said.”

“You said to remove his food, his place at the table, and anything that made him feel secure.”

Claire could barely breathe, but she refused to look away.

Michael turned toward her.

“I was not asking them to starve him.”

“You were teaching them how to break him.”

“I knew you would protect him. That was the point.”

Ruiz entered the room.

“That is enough.”

Michael stood.

“You promised I would not be arrested here.”

“No one promised that.”

Officers moved toward him.

Michael pointed at Victor.

“He designed everything.”

Victor remained seated.

“I advised you not to make illegal representations.”

“You gave me Claire’s signature samples.”

“I did not.”

“You said the trust would protect me.”

“I said fulfilling the agreement might satisfy my client.”

“Then tell them who your client is!”

Victor closed the briefcase.

“I am not required to answer.”

Naomi slid a court order across the table.

“You are now.”

Victor read the document.

His expression did not change, but his fingers stopped moving.

The order required disclosure of the trust’s controlling beneficiary and all parties involved in acquiring Michael’s debts.

Victor looked at Claire.

“You may regret forcing this open.”

“Who owns the trust?”

He removed a sealed page from the briefcase.

The beneficiary line contained a single name.

Gabriel Merritt.

Carla whispered, “He’s alive?”

Victor did not answer.

Ruiz placed Michael under arrest for fraud, conspiracy, and financial crimes.

As officers led him away, Michael turned to Claire.

“Ask Victor why Gabriel chose Dustin’s birthday as the trust’s activation date.”
