Chapter 8 - box 391

The bank opened at eight thirty.

Ethan spent the two hour wait inside his car.

Daniel remained nearby but agreed not to enter.

For the first time since Claire vanished, Ethan held something she had physically touched after the crash.

The handwritten note.

The pressure marks from her pen.

The uneven angle of the final word.

He remembered Claire writing shopping lists on the kitchen counter.

Birthday cards.

Notes inside his lunch.

The tiny message she once left taped to the steering wheel after they argued.

Still mad at you. Still love you. Drive safe.

Ethan pressed the note against his forehead.

"Where are you?"

At 8:32, he entered the bank.

The key opened safe deposit box 391.

Inside were three items.

A flash drive.

A sealed letter.

A photograph.

The photograph showed Claire and Corinne together.

They looked about twenty three.

Boston.

Snow behind them.

Both smiling.

A man stood between them.

His face had been scratched away with black ink.

On the back, Claire had written:

A.V. is not who he says he is.

Ethan opened the letter.

It was addressed to him.

Ethan,

If you are reading this, then something happened exactly the way I was afraid it would.

First, Maisie is yours.

Never doubt that.

Second, Corinne knows more than she will admit, but she is not the beginning of this.

Do not make the mistake of thinking she is the most dangerous person involved.

Third, Daniel believes he is protecting our family.

That belief makes him easy to use.

Do not trust what he says until you know who gave him the information.

Ethan stopped reading.

His hands shook.

He continued.

I found records connected to my mother's fertility treatment. At first I thought it was medical fraud. Then I found names of children born from the original research group.

Some died young.

Some disappeared.

Some were watched for decades.

I am one of them.

Maisie may be another.

I tried to take proof to federal investigators.

Before I could, someone inside the investigation warned Halcyon.

That is when I started preparing.

If I disappeared, I needed you to believe I was dead long enough to keep you from searching.

I am sorry.

Those words crushed him.

Claire had participated in the deception.

At least partly.

Ethan read on.

The crash was not supposed to happen.

I was going to leave the car near the river and disappear voluntarily.

Someone changed the plan.

Someone tried to kill me.

If I survived, then I cannot know who found me first.

Trust Rebecca only if she says the phrase "blue winter."

Do not trust Corinne with Maisie.

Do not trust Daniel with the original ledger.

And Ethan, if anyone tells you Adrian Vale is one man, they are lying.

The letter ended there.

Ethan sat inside the private viewing room for several minutes.

Adrian Vale was not one man.

A code?

A position?

An organization?

He inserted the flash drive into the secure bank computer.

One folder appeared.

Inside were dozens of scanned documents.

Most were encrypted.

One video file was not.

Ethan clicked.

Claire appeared on screen.

The recording date showed two weeks before her crash.

She sat in Ethan's home office.

Same bookcase.

Same lamp.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, I didn't get the chance to tell you myself."

Ethan covered his mouth.

Claire continued.

"I need you to understand something about Corinne."

Ethan leaned closer.

"She isn't following me."

Claire paused.

"She's running from the same people."

The video suddenly glitched.

Then resumed.

"She made terrible choices. So did I. But if she comes near you after I'm gone, don't assume every lie she tells is meant to hurt you."

Another glitch.

Claire looked over her shoulder.

"I have to go."

Then she said something Ethan did not expect.

"If Daniel says he found me after the crash, ask him who called him."

The recording ended.

Ethan removed the drive.

He exited the bank.

Daniel waited beside the car.

"What did she leave?"

Ethan studied his brother.

"Who called you?"

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"After Claire's crash. Who told you she was alive?"

Daniel went still.

Ethan knew immediately.

"You didn't find her."

Daniel looked around the parking lot.

"Ethan."

"Who called you?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

"I never knew his real name."

Ethan felt cold.

"What name did he use?"

May you like

Daniel looked at him.

"Adrian."
