Chapter 2 - seven months after the funeral

Claire had disappeared seventeen months earlier.

The official story had been tragically simple.

She had been driving alone through heavy rain on a mountain road outside Asheville when her vehicle went through a barrier and plunged into a flooded ravine.

The car was found three days later.

Claire was not inside.

Police believed she had been swept away after escaping the wreckage or being thrown from the vehicle.

Search teams spent eleven days combing the river.

Nothing.

No body.

No clothing.

No jewelry.

No confirmed sighting.

After five months, the investigation became a missing person case with a presumed fatality.

Ethan refused to believe she was dead.

For months, he kept her side of the closet untouched.

He continued paying her phone bill.

He called her voicemail late at night just to hear her recorded voice.

Then Maisie was born.

Claire had been seven months pregnant when she disappeared.

That was the detail that had made the case national news for almost a week.

Pregnant woman vanishes after mountain crash.

But the story became stranger when a newborn girl was left anonymously at St. Joseph's Hospital two months after Claire vanished.

A handwritten note was pinned to the baby's blanket.

Her name is Maisie Carter.

Call Ethan.

DNA confirmed Ethan was the father.

The hospital's security footage showed only a hooded woman entering through an emergency corridor with the infant.

Her face was never clearly visible.

Ethan became a father and a widower within the same season.

Or at least he believed he had.

Corinne entered his life soon afterward.

She had known Claire casually through charity work.

At first she helped with groceries.

Then childcare.

Then legal paperwork.

She knew Ethan was barely sleeping.

She knew he forgot meals.

She knew he sometimes stood for an hour beside Maisie's crib because he was terrified someone would take the baby too.

Corinne had seemed patient.

Safe.

Reliable.

Eight months later, they married quietly.

Ethan told himself he was doing it partly for Maisie.

Now, standing with Claire's name printed across legal documents hidden in his own home, he wondered whether every decision since the crash had been guided by someone else.

The first document appeared to be a confidential patient authorization.

Ethan skimmed quickly.

Claire Carter.

Female.

Thirty three years old at intake.

The date was seven months after the crash.

Status.

Living.

Ethan gripped the paper harder.

"This can't be real."

Corinne stood several feet away.

She said nothing.

Ethan flipped to the next page.

There were references to a private medical facility called Northbridge Recovery Center.

Restricted contact.

Identity protection.

Neurological evaluation.

Temporary guardianship authorization.

The language was legal and clinical, but Ethan understood enough.

Claire had been alive.

Someone had known.

Someone had signed paperwork controlling who could see her.

Then he reached the witness section.

His eyes stopped.

Daniel Carter.

Ethan's older brother.

For several seconds, Ethan could not process the letters.

Daniel.

The man who had organized Claire's search parties.

Daniel, who had stood beside Ethan during the memorial service.

Daniel, who had held Maisie at Ethan and Corinne's wedding.

Ethan looked up.

"No."

Corinne whispered, "Ethan."

"No."

He pulled out his phone.

Corinne moved forward.

"Don't call him."

Ethan stared at her.

"You knew."

"I can explain some of it."

"Some?"

"Ethan, please."

"Was Claire alive after the accident?"

Corinne's silence answered him.

Maisie began crying.

Ethan immediately lowered his voice.

He lifted his daughter into his arms.

She pressed her face against his neck.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

He did not know whether that was true.

He only knew he had to get Maisie away from Corinne.

Ethan picked up his car keys.

Corinne stepped toward the door.

"Where are you going?"

"Somewhere you're not."

"You can't take her."

Ethan almost laughed.

"Watch me."

"Legally, Ethan, you don't understand what you're doing."

That stopped him.

He turned slowly.

"What did you just say?"

Corinne realized her mistake.

"Ethan."

"What do you mean legally?"

Nothing.

Then Ethan looked at the stack of papers again.

Near the bottom of one page was a court file number.

He photographed it.

Corinne moved toward him.

Ethan backed away.

"Stay there."

"I'm trying to protect you."

"From what?"

She swallowed.

"From what Claire became."

The words hit him like ice.

Ethan tightened his hold on Maisie.

"What Claire became?"

Corinne looked toward the windows as if expecting someone.

"Ethan, things happened after the crash that you don't know."

"Then tell me."

"I can't."

"Can't or won't?"

Corinne lowered her voice.

"If Daniel knows you opened that cabinet, he will come here."

Ethan stared at her.

She was afraid.

Not acting afraid.

Actually afraid.

"Why?"

Corinne looked at the documents.

"Because those were never supposed to stay in this house."

A car door slammed outside.

Corinne's face drained of color.

Ethan looked toward the front window.

A black SUV had stopped at the curb.

May you like

His phone began ringing.

Daniel.
